Do you have a block heater in the superduty? that really helps with the 7.3 I borrowed.

 

Yes I do but it isnt needed unless -20 or colder. 6.4s have a much better glow plug system, plus its a common rail

 

We don't have inspections here either but if a cop wants he can stop you if he thinks you are violating a law. Ask Andy how he knows this! Hell I had a buddy that had a monster of an F-150 back in 2001 and a local cop pulled him over one night after he had been DD the thing for years, and wrote him 27 tickets for equipment violations, tires too big, bumper height, no fender flares covering wheels, etc. When he failed to meet the dates for the "fix it" Ticket requirements, the state took his plates.

I have an 8 mile route to and from work, that is the extent of my driving lately. All of which consists of 2 stop signs and 55mph speed areas. No city, and few cops.

 

Gotcha good to know, anyway to put in an electric oil heater or anything one you could run on a timer? or just sell it and get a gasser.

 

-11, with a wind chill of -21 this morning. I think it gelled? Im not sure, the boost gauge pegged out and EBP spiked, it would shake and shudder at idle. Lots of blue smoke. I limped it back home and put it in the shop. Turned the heat on 45 min later it ran fine? Guess I should have plugged it in last night? lol

I left it at home however.

It threw 4-5 codes complaining about EBP, Boost, MAP Sensor, etc etc. The rail pressure was fine though. So I ma not really sure whats up.

I dont know many diesels that will start/run good in this without being plugged in

 

Zach, When it's cold out like that i put a bottle of Diesel 911 in in the tank each time i fill up. It holds up better in the cold weather than the white or grey bottles of power service. It won't hurt your truck either.

Josh, I do have to say my Dodge 5.9L Cummins work truck started up just fine without being plugged in everyday sitting for 12-14 hours straight in -14+ temps. Dont know why but our work trucks hardly freeze up.

 

My 7.3 will run fine with out being plugged in down to about -10. After that it's very smokey and slow to start up. I use the recommended amount of white bottle diesel power. Our 5.9 cummins work trucks always have fresh fuel in them, which I think contributes to no gel ups.

 

After I said that I remembered our cummins at work started just fine. but we put 911 in it as well.

 

nice looking diesel you have there!,but I have to ask you why? diesel here in Milwaukee is 3.59.9 ouch! - but this guy I work with has a diese ram 4x4 with tuner and get 24mpg.

 

But i dont see what plugging it in has anything to do with it when it was sitting inside the shop. I mean it was like 25 degrees in there.

From what I can tell either the vgt/turbo actuator froze in one spot allowing too much boost and/or the EBP (exhaust back pressure sensor) collected moisture and froze causing it to read an incorrect pressure which threw the computer off. It started and ran fine later. Now it has not ran all day, if i get time I will go out and try to start it and see what happens.

I think it froze on the way to town, not in the shop, only way to fix that is move south or get a cover!

 

Zach isn't there a return line for the fuel? I would expect that, when it's running, it should be heating up the fuel and returning the excess fuel back to the tank, keeping the fuel warm.

Is it possible condensation in the intercooler froze and threw ice through the engine or something? Melted and threw water in? I don't know...

 

After some more reading the VGT actuator has coolant that runs through it and the fuel cooler, when it is so cold it could possibly feeze. I Have some type of coolant leak maybe it is from that system because I cant find any other leaks and the main coolant system is still full. Its still 0 or below right now, no way im going out there even with heat inthe shop. It takes so long to warm up. I am also very tired of debugging stuff. Work has been everything but a delight lately that by the time i get home I am whipped.

It ran fine this morning, didnt even plug it in either. Must have been too cold for that actuator.
