So you can't put a hole in it? I thought you just needed to break the seal?

I have one of those Octagon shaped things but its doing no good at all it just slips i've tried 3 different one of those. i tried to put a screw driver though the middle but dont have a whole lot of room to work with to hammer it in.

Worse comes to worse, you could drill a hole in it.

Invest in a good oil filter removal tool. It looks like a wrench but it has a chain that bites back onto the tool. Slip it over the filter and you have a lever.

Or use the screwdriver method (never heard of that before but I could see it working).

It's most likely just the air pressure built up inside. If you tighten it too much when you put it on it'll do that. In which case you probably just need to push or pull on it as hard as you can. Maybe you should even have someone doing it with you as hard as they can. I kind of had the same problem. Damn dealership mechanics didn't know anything, I swear.

Channel locks. My girlfriends dad insists on cranking on them till they don't move with those stupid cap things, and it just makes taking them off so darn hard, especially in a little honda civic where there is maybe 2 inches of clearance near it.

Its cause your using a Fram filter! Those things are junk. It seems like the gasket is just stuck to the block. The rubber strap would be the best thing, so is there any way at all you can get one up there?
