rear end whine

My 2011 ranger 4.0 5 speed manual 4x4 w/ 50K has developed a high pitched
whine coming from the rear end. Ideas?

Possibly the pinion bearing.
Could be wheel bearings.

Need more info.
What speed, only under load?

By under load I mean on the gas. As in does it happen when you're coasting and off the gas

a howl or whine can be a few things, bearings are first guess, gears are the second. drain the fluid and see how much metal is in it.
