HIDS.....

anyone got them in your 04-Current F150? Both me and my wife,
notice that our lighting in the truck (low and high) suck ***. Especially
here in Texas where's its really dark out in the country. I'm looking at a 6k kit and a 8k kit for the fogs. I've got HIDs in the ranger and they work great with the projector housing....and I really noticed a difference. How do they work in the stock housing for the F150? Thanks guys!

 

I think the projector housing is the key. Theres some aftermarket projector headlights for the 150 but I think they all look ricey.

 

I see a lot of 150s with them in stock housings here and they all glare really bad and have crappy output on the road itself, just buy some silverstar ultras for both

 

the problem with silverstars is they don't last very long. They are great when they work, but they burn out quickly.

So is it the cut-off that sucks? glare can be controlled by angle....especially with the f150 being easy to adjust, there is no side to side, just up and down. I know when I had hids in my ranger's stock housings the glare sucked, but I could tone it down a bit. I dunno....guys your input is appreciated!

 

No the glare cannot be controlled by angle. lol
Sorry I cannot stand HIDs in any of the halogen assemblies that I have seen, including F150s.
The lighting on my F150 is great, I think you need to just adjust them better. Currently I'm using silverstars in the heads and fogs, the light is very full high and low. I also modified the fogs to stay on with high beams. I have had the silverstars in for over a year so far, they are cheap(er) on amazon.com.
I drive about 40 miles to and from work when it is dark most of the year, country roads with no lighting and lots of deer, not a single problem seeing with these.

I ran yellow fogs for a while too, you can see how the light fills in.

Also you do realize that any bulbs get dim over time? Just because the bulbs work doesn't mean they are any good. I drove my mother-in-laws subaru outback when I was in Oregon and had to replace the headlight bulbs because I couldn't see a damn thing at night. The lights worked but they might as well have been parking lights.

Also, if you look at the fog lights they are super easy to aim as well. You just need a phillips head screwdriver.

 

Brian, well I'm glad someone is having luck with silverstars. I'll never buy em again. I've spent probabley over 200$ on them (between the ranger/escape/focus) and they aren't THAT great. I just purchased a set of 6000k HIDS (35w) Bi-xenon for 78$ with a warranty. Figured I'd try them and see how they look. I've adjusted the lights already. I did that the 2nd day we got it. it's the light ouput just isn't there. I figured they want $50 bucks for silverstars here...I could spend 20 more dollars and get a set of hids, with waterproof ballasts (injected) I'll let ya know how it turns out.

Getting back to glare. YES glare can be effected by angle...if you adjust the angle it will make it better. I've done that with my projector's that are on my ranger.

Brian I also meant to ask you, did you notice ANY difference with the intake? I'm looking into a Gryphon too....

 

No just noise with the intake and slightly higher intake temps. I got it for $80 so I put it on with new tunes. I would probably take it off it is wasn't already custom tuned for it. Lol
if I bought a new intake it would be a volant with dry filter although I still wouldn't expect anything from it. Search on f150online.com for gotts mod, guys are just removing the restrictor that goes into the fender with a bigger piece of PVC or something.

Yes adjusting the headlights will affect the glare but not fix it. I'm just very against hids in halogen reflectors and tired of getting blinded by them all the time. I would love hids as well if they had a decent output and I didn't feel they scattered too much.

Silverstars definitely aren't the best thing out there but I like the output, they arent bothersome and they are legal. Personally I would rather run some higher wattage bulbs in mine than hid as I feel light pattern is more important than brightness. Although I have no problems seeing as it is anyway.

 

Yeah I'm coming up on a year with my Silverstars and they still look fine. Got both heads and fogs for 20 each.

Good luck on the HIDs, sounds like you've already made up your mind anyway though...

 

yeah I got a 6000k kit that is Bi-xenon (high and low are HID) with the relay, and wiring, with digital ballasts....we'll see how it goes, if it sucks I'll take it off....but if it helps my wife see that's all that matters.

But has anyone seen any decent projector headlights for the 98-00 Ranger? I can only find fugly ones...

Got the hids installed....really nice kit. Bi-xenon kit and it works great. I'll post up some pics tonight as soon as it get's dark. I'll get some pics of the install too!

 

I just installed a set of high/low hid's in my 05 ranger. Light output is great and they don't have as much glare as I thought they would. I have adjusted them and peple are flashing me like crazy still. I had hid's in my Acura Rsx and there was a ton of glare. Will black housing headlights help cut down on glare in the ranger likethey did in my rsx? Or maybe tint my headlights?
