1990 Ranger code reader help

I recently purchased a 1990 Ranger Xlt 2WD with a 2.3 dual plug engine , 5 speed that runs a little rough and has a check engine light on. I have a Equus Ford code reader that according to the manual will work on 1981 thru 1995 Ford cars and trucks and will read ECM, PCM, and ABS codes. The only test plug I could find was under the hood, drivers side front between the headlight and radiator. The problem is the tester will not fight on this plug. Is this the code test plug or is it located somewhere else on the vehicle? Thanks for any help.Mike
