Bad night

Last night I installed new spark plugs and plug wires. when i finally got done and cranked the truck, something started squelling. come to find out one of my pullys, not sure which one yet due to lack of light, is going out and screamin its head off. can i buy just a replacement pully or do i have to buy what the pully is attached to. Also, where can i buy a new pully and it not cost an arm and a leg. thanks in advanced for the help.

My pulleys strated squeaking to high hell one day too. I bought a new belt and a new Idler pulley. The idler pulley wasnt bad, but it was the ALternator that was sqeaking. I called the parts store and they told me I'd have to replace the whole thing, not just the pulley. I guess It depends on which goes out. Also, I just put the new belt on without changing the alternator and the sqeak went away. Try that first. Might as well replace it anyways.

the belt is brand new and i've already sprayed WD-40 on it. it stops the squel for about 5 minutes then it goes back to the way it was.

Replace the idler pulley. It's usually the idler or the belt.

i'm going to get the serpentine belt tool from autozone so i can check to see what pully isn't turning. i'm guessing it's the idler pully because it is starting to get some wierd looking marks on it that were not there a few days ago.

Nonsense! I payed $15 for mine. Didnt need it and brought it back. And to tell which is sqealing, just take the belt off and start spinning them individually, thats how I found mine.

I got mine at a local Pep-Boys, dont know if they are nationwide or not. I think it'd be better to get a new one, you could spend $10 on one from a junk yard, and get home and it would do it again. Make sure its that pulley before you replace it. Mine sqeaked when I spun it with my hand. Mine too would go away for a few minutes when I put belt dressing on it, but would promptly come back.

Alright i went and pulled the belt off and rolled each pulley and my idler pulley is fine. but unfortunatley its my alternator is the one squelling. the cheapest one i've found was $124.00 with a lifetime warranty.

Same thing happened to me. In that case, I'd just go to the junkyard and get an alternator. Although with a new belt, it quit doing it. If you've got a new belt, I guess that leaves you with finding another alt.

I would much rather just spend the extra money on an altenator that I can have a lifetime warranty on it

You know, I just now read this post and my truck does the same thing. Did you replace the alternator? Did the noise go away? Has anyone else have similar problems/results?

i haven't replaced it but i did take the pulley off the altenator and spray wd-40 down into the alternator where the pulley connects and it shut up. now and then it does make a little noise but other than that its been good.

My idler pully squeaks at startup, usually only after a heavy rain; maybe the humidity in the air, or the fan spraying water at the idler causes it to squeak.

I had the right-side fender liner out this weekend to change the spark plugs. Easy access to the idler pully when the liner was out... should have changed it then!!
