Moving soon so I need to know my Towing limitations on a 2.5l

Ok, I need some honesty here fellas...

I'm going to be going from benicia, ca to around fairborn, oh here in the 1st week of july.

I need to get my truck and cobra there along with my crap...

I need to know, assuming I have (will be getting one soon) a level 3/4 hitch setup, Can I flat bed my cobra and have a mattress and 50inch lcd screen with some other crap in the bed of the ranger?

Reason I ask is... it's gonna be like $1500 to pay someone to ship my cobra out there.

is my idea not feasable? I know it would struggle going up hills, but I'm only planning on doing 55-ish the entire way

I wouldnt do it

the tow rating for your truck is probably around 2k lbs and i'm sure the car is more than that.

you could try to do it, struggle, use alot more gas and possibly ruin your transmission, or just have it done and not have to worry about it.

A friend of mine had his mustang shipped cross country and i think it only cost about 600

hummm.....HELL NO. Rent a uhaul and have a buddy drive one of the cars.

I'm assuming with a stock bumper the towing rating would be 2000lbs then? What about with a level 3/4 hitch?

I would be looking at renting a flatbed with a integrated braking system on it anyhow.

"if" I could even find a buddy to drive my cobra, it would cost a butt ton... premium only in the cobra. and then regular for the ranger? I would double my gas expenses easily! ouch.

I'm wanting to separate the "I don't think/feel like thats a good idea" guys from the "well, you could, but this is what you can expect fact based guys."

one other thing... and this is a really big "what if.."

suppose I go to the junk yard and find a v-6 ranger and nabbed the motor/trans and put it in my truck, then would it be ok to do that?

read your owners manual......for your truck your max tow rating is as follows:

assuming you have a regular cab, long bed, and an automatic transmission
- MAX GCRW = 5,500 pounds (that is total weight of what you are hauling and the truck)
- MAX Trailer Weight = 2,220 pounds (includes trailer and what is on the trailer)

assuming you have a regular cab, long bed, and a manual transmission
- MAX GCRW = 4,800pounds (that is total weight of what you are hauling and the truck)
- MAX Trailer Weight = 1,600 pounds (includes trailer and what is on the trailer)


those numbers are straight out of your owners manual.........

the MAX for the bumper is 2000#, but i wouldn't get close to that...

i would say the Mustang & a trailer weighs more than 2,220 pounds.......

you can do whatever you want to, but i wouldn't do it.......

you could, but it wouldn't be worth it.....it would cost more to do that than it would cost to ship the car cross country...

Towing your car with your truck isn't an option. Your truck doesn't have enough ***** and trying to pull that much with it from Cali to Ohio is just going to break sh*t....

EDIT: your car is a drop top correct? They weigh more than a standard coupe and the curb weight of a 2003 GT coupe is 3,664 pounds. Its just too much weight for a 4 banger.....

yes a 4.0 would be able to pull it.....

4.0 #'s....all 2wd NON-Edge #'s....Non-Edge's are rated more than Edges....

Well, hell... I might be f*cked and have to make the drive twice then. : ( God, this sucks.

Who's a good auto transport company? One place quoted me 1600!

Edit: General Motors uses them and only them to transport all of there cars. They are reasonable (I think) and they really do take good care of your ride. A neighbor of mine had a 67 corvette sting ray shipped to Michigan from The carolinas and it was impressive to see how well they took care of the vehicles in the trailer...

that is absolute MAX, no matter if you add a reciever hitch or not....that is the absolute safety limit of your truck...

a hitch is only as strong as it's weakest point, and that is alwasy the truck and its componets....

same reason why a 4x4 isn't rated as much as a 2wd......the torsion bars are the weak link i guess...

Each engine/trans combination has a GCWR (the max total weight of the loaded truck and loaded trailer combination). Edges weigh about 120~160 pounds more than comparable coil spring trucks. That means that the max trailer weight with an Edge must be that much less so that the GCWR is not exceeded.

I have your same problem. They convinced me not to pull a jeep on a trailer behind me 3.0 v6 and a jeep is alot lighter than a mustang.

Btw do you have the towing numbers for my 3.0 maurice?

it should be in your owners guide Jared, on page 125-128.......

but here ya go......

Manual tranny with ext cab 2wd 3.0 Sport(Edge)...
- Max GCWR = 6,000 pounds
- Max Trailer = 2,340 pounds

Auto tranny with ext cab 2wd 3.0 Sport(Edge)....
- Max GCWR = 6,000 pounds
- Max Trailer = 2,300 pounds

and your owners manual gives a special note to the 3.0 modles:
**When towing on roads with steep grades or moderate but long sustained grades (5 miles [8Km] or more), or when ambient temperatures exceed 100*F (37*C), vehicle speed should not exceed 45 mph (72km/h) in both cases.**
