4X4 Grinding Noise

Hey I just bought myself a 94 Ranger 3.0L and I am having a few problems with it. When I push the 4x4 button on the dash it goes into 4x4 but as I speed up i get a grinding noise from the front end. For what I have read this is probably my Hubs making the noise?????? Has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it?

Yes. I know my 93 had manual locking hubs, I dunno if they came that way or what, but if yours did, make sure they are fully in the 'Locked' Position.

I did a little more playing around with my ranger and I am not sure that it is my hubs any more. If I drive at like 20-30Km/h in 4x4 Hi it makes a noise if I stop and put it in 4x4 Low I have no grinding at all at same speeds. So now I am thinking that it is My Transfer case that is messed up. Anyone know what years are set up with the same Transfer case? Anyone Rebuilt one of these? Any comments, help or links would be great.

Check the t-case shift motor. They are a common cause of inability to shift into 4x4. Clean off the electrical contacts and make sure the motor is in good shape. Due to it being older, I would bet that the motor needs to be cleaned, fixed, or replaced.

I can't say that I know what is causing your problem, I have a 94 also, with a 4.0L and auto tranny, mine came with electronic push button hubs too. One time I stopped, put it in 4-wheel, started to go, and got a grinding noise, I stopped, took it out of 4-wheel, backed up about ten feet, then put it in 4-wheel again and the noise went away.

Hope this helps....

thanks guys, I will look at my shifting motor I can see that it has been tampered with before so I assume the guy before me had problems with it. (broken clips) but I also found another problem, I see that one of my front hubs looks different then the other in just the way it is built so one has been changed and the other one is broken inside so that might be a big part of my problem.

Well I think I have found my problem, I replaced one hub that was busted and checked over the eletric shifting stuff and it all seems to work fine. But I had to do a ball joint and was playing around with my front diff, and it turns hard. I think I must have a bearing or two gone in it or something becuase it runs hard. Anyone had front diff trouble?? any tips on rebuild or replacing? the auto wrecker by myplace wants $225CAD for a used one

I have a front diff with 4.10's and a stock driveshaft hooked up to it that I would let go for dirt cheap. 4.10's and only 36,000 miles on it.

But you have TTB lol n/m.

Describe what "turns hard" means exactly, ellaborate. What exactly are you turning, which direction, what is turning b/c of what you are turning etc.

when I turn the imput shaft going into my front differential it feels like there is a bearing that is buggered up and that my gear teeth arn't meshing properly.

The u-joints at the stub shaft could be going out.
