Depends on how extreme. Basic mod is just removing the "snorkel" which is designed to muffle intake noise. It leaves a bigger intake hole, and allows intake noise, which sounds cool.
You can also remove more of the airbox by cutting away or drilling out parts of the lower part. I have 1" holes bored all throughout the lower section of mine so that there is air intake higher up on it. They are there front, sides, and back.
Although this may allow more warm air from the engine compartment in, it also allows the airbox to survive water crossings better without getting jammed up with water. With only a single intake hole, low down, in the front, the possibility for ingesting a large slug of water is higher. Now, if that hole is underwater, I have a number of holes higher up and on different faces of the box that are still above water -- maybe, lol.
