Can anyone tell me what this is?

Just bought a 2001 ranger xlt supercab 2wd 4.0. Took a look at the undercarriage and found something attached to the driveshaft. It can be moved front to back using a **** located underneath the drivers seat. what is it and what does it do? any help appreciated.

Looks like it may be a disconnect for the rearend. Was this Ranger flat towed behind an RV by chance?

Just when you think you have seen everything. But it does look like you could take the 2 u-joint caps off and move the bracket forward... driveshaft would just sit and rear end could freewheel.

I'm standing behind the towing theory.

Wow, I guess its a nice addition. Makes sense since the truck has front receivers for monster tow hooks. Anyways, thanks for the help.
