Actually it absorbs them and the evap system sends them into the engine to be burned.

The charcoal canister can absorb a foot-ball sized amount of fumes. It's kind of cool.

Thanks guys. Well my real problem is the rubber hose that goes into it has a hole caused by my exhaust. Where would I get a new line for it? And is this hurting my mpg or anything else?

It might slightly hurt your mpg, when the PCM commands the evap solenoid to "purge" the fumes into the engine, they might not be getting there, and that is a source of fuel. I'm not sure if the PCM commands the injectors slightly more lean for the addition of the fumes or if during a more rich mixture situation they are added.
