Question for everyone, not just the V8 guys

So I have come across a steal of a find! I can get a 5.0 HO out of a 1988 Lincoln LSC (I do believe that is the model), complete with the harness and the AOD already bolted to it for $350! It runs great and all I would need is a computer to make it all work.

My question is, first off, who would do this, being that the HO is the same engine that was in the mustang's, and who would use an AOD for 4x4, and is it a trustworthy transmission for off-roading?

If the AOD is doable, does anyone know where I can find the tailshaft to make it a 4x4 hookup (sorry, brain fart and forgot the terms)?

Well, hold on there buddy... remember I got another truck so I won't be letting go so easy... it'll cost ya....

Thats to say that I can come up with the money to make all of this work.... Trust me, I would much rather just get a new tranny and call it a day, but I wanted to see if anyone else knew more about this than me.

if i remeber correctly and its been a good while since i had to look but is it 1991 and newer 5.0L?

edit: looks like maybe 1985? wonder if this is correct or not

Throttle body fuel injection first appeared for the 302 on the Lincoln Continental in 1980, and was made standard on all applications in 1983 except manual transmission equipped Mustangs and Capris, equipped first with two-barrel, then later 4-barrel carburation. The block was fitted with revised, taller lifter bosses to accept roller lifters, and a steel camshaft in 1985, and electronic sequential fuel injection was introduced in 1986. This speed-density based system with two-piece, cast aluminum manifold, was fitted on all engines through 1988, and replaced by a mass-air type measuring system, with the same manifold as the speed-density system, beginning in 1989, and continuing, with minor revisions until the retirement of the engine in 2001.

Gotcha Mark, thanks for the correction. I think for all general purposes, I would like to score a 302 as young in age as possible. That way it doesn't sink the bank when i need to repair it.

i say rebuild your 4.0, throw a Comp Cam 422 cam in it, do some port/polish on the heads, add full exhaust (headers back), and get a XCalibrator 2 and you will be good to go with plenty of power out of the 4.0........that are my future plans for my 4.0 (well and maybe making it a 4.4L stroker)

or swap to a manual transmission....when I swapped mine out and went back to the stock tune, the truck felt better than it ever did with the 93 Torque tune w/the auto tranny.....I can't wait to get my new 93 Torque tune w/the manual tranny.....it is a totally different truck with the manual transmission in it....

In my truck i have the same combo of 302 HO and an AOD. I've owned the truck almost a year now and have had the tranny out 7 different times. The AOD is definately not my favorite V8 trans but it works. It uses a throttle cable to control the shifts, as opposed to a vaccum driven. The throttle cable is a bit of a pain b/c if it's not adjusted right it will ruin the tranny in a very short period of time. The AOD takes a good amount of abuse, but the OD bands love to wear out on them. If your going to use it for off road purposes you'll probably want a really good shift kit for it b/c the AOD has a tendency to shift early, especially if the tires are slipping, and there is no way to adjust it normally. You can find the 4x4 tailshafts on the internet, but they are a couple bucks new. I believe from 85 to 91 or so the F-150 and Bronco used the 4x4 AOD as well. I listed a site below that carries most parts for the AOD. Hope that helps.

I like all those ideas! However, what 5 speed would I use, and could I use the existing harness and not worry about anything plugged up to the automatic transmission connectors?

you can use the existing auto wiring harness, but you have to splice 2 pairs of wires together for it to work....

get a M5OD-R1HD out of an '03+ 4.0 SOHC......the 4.0 OHV and the 4.0 SOHC bell housing is the same...
