Ball joints

My truck failed inspection because both lower ball joints are supposedly bad. How do i check this myself to make sure they are bad.

jack up the front end. let the tires hang and grap the tire at 12 and 6 position and move in and out you will feel it clunk

I dread this when it comes time for mine to be done. I talked to a shop today that quoted me 800 to do lower and upper complete job including the alignment. Damn why cant parts be made that dont break. I hate not being mechanically inclined and Zach won't come help me either.
