What is the maximum weight I can tow with my 2004 4.0L V6 Ranger?

 

Its not much since you have a manual.

 

I am a lazy man. But I will go look I guess. I bought it used so I hope there is still a manual in there. I mean there was no jack when I went to rotate my tires. Haha

is the manual tranny really that weak? or are they just covering their asses from a legal perspective?

 

I have heard its a warranty thing and a crappy transmission thing. Not sure what though.

 

i pulled a massive 22' ski nautique on a 4 wheel trailer last weekend, my auto didnt so much as hiccup. im not sure of the weight, but it was a heavy *****

 

id have to look in the owners manual but my 08' 5speed i beleive can tow 5000lbs and its 5750 for the auto.

Nevermind... 3100lbs... interesting... all the more reason for me to go to an 09 4cyl 4x4 taco.. they are rated at 3500lbs! LOL wtf

 

ive towed 4000lbs with my truck and the trans has held up fine. ford just under rates the manual trans trucks cause people burn the clutches out trying to tow stuff if you know how to drive a 5 speed you will be fine

 

its the way u drive manual.... prolly its much lower cause ppl tend to eat the clutch easily with a load...

if u can drive good with a big load it should be same tow capacity i guess. dam some ppl even burn the clutch with no extra weight.. it all depends

 

Manuals are lower rated than automatics because the clutch is the limiting factor. A Ford acceptance test requires that a vehicle must be able to launch at GCWR from rest on a steep test grade. An automatic uses the torque multiplication of the converter to nearly double the available torque into the transmission at launch. The manual, on the other hand, must waste part of its available power to heat loss through the clutch during the critical initial part of the launch from rest.

If you took a 4.0L auto and a 4.0L manual and loaded both to 9500 Gross Combined Weight Rating and tried to launch them on the Ford test slope, the automatic would slowly crawl away while the manual smoked its clutch into oblivion.

Obviously, the situation is not nearly so problematic for the manual when launching on level ground. However, for liability, warranty and customer satisfaction reasons, Ford's maximum tow ratings must consider performance in the worst case scenario.
