3rd Brake Light Turn signal

is there any way to make the cargo lights on the XLT turn on with the turn signals? i think that would be pretty cool to do...

would i have to change out the bulbs to amber?....

It's easy enough and has been done many times. Some people leave them white. Some use an all-red lens. Wowak has his set up to flash yellow - I don't know the details of how he did it but you could shoot him a PM.

If you use the white lense you need an amber bulb to be legal. I use an amber bulb and painted the clear part yellow with glass paint so it would match my 98-99 style taillights.

All you have to do is locate the appropriate wires in the dash harness near the front of the transmission tunnel (use the front turn signal wires if you're using yellow bulbs, tap into the rear turnsignal wires if you're using an all-red housing, that way all three bulbs will light up when you hit the brake,) T into those wires, and run new wire up to the 3rd light housing (usually easiest to go under the door sill, up the inside of the B pillar {C pillar on a 4 door} and inside the headliner along the back) cut off the "hot" wire to the cargo lights, tape it off well so it never shorts to ground, leave the black ground wires connected, and connect the new wires to the appropriate bulbs.

I can't remember off the top of my head what the color codes are for every truck, but at least from 2000-2003 the front turn signals are green with a white stripe for the passenger side, and white with a blue stripe for the driver's side. If you want to use the rears, an easy way to find the wire color is to pop your taillight off and look what color the wire going to it is.

Autozone/Pep-Boys/Advance-Discount. Less than $10 total in parts. Just take your 3rd brakelight housing into the store with you and try some bulb holders until you find one that fits nice, and then get bulbs to fit it. Or if you frequent the junkyards, grab some out of an older Ranger w/ the bedlights.
