buying an ford escape.

Hi guys,

I am trading in my BMW and buying my wife a 2007 Escape Limited this week. I am just looking to see if there are any common problems to look for early in its life.( or later for that matter) The one we are looking at has 10k On it. it still has 25k left on the warranty.

Anyone on here have one? Pros/Cons?

Also, Are there and good escape forums?

Thanks, As always

From what I hear, they are a pretty reliable vehicle. A co-workers wife has one with 90K on it and no problems at all...

I have an 08 Limited.

I went from a 04 F-150 to the 08 and the 08 is loaded. The only thing I am missing is nav and the bigger stereo system.

With the v6 and 4wd, I still get about 20 miles around town.

Here's a forum:
http://www.escape-central.com/

The only issue repeated on the forums was the tranny. You'd have to read up on it. I personally think there's nothing to it. On the forums, one guy has a problem so everyone "thinks" they have a problem. I think the prescribed remedy is a flush/fill after 3,000 miles. I never had the problem and never did the refill.

Its a great vehicle. The 3.0 has plenty of pep. Great room inside. Great hauling in the back. We got to where we would take it instead of my ranger to pick up a dishwasher, etc. Shut the back door and that kind of cargo is secured.

We have a loaded '07 V6 Mercury Mariner (same as an Escape) and it is a great vehicle. Roomy, peppy, looks great, and lots of options. I love the huge windshield and factory Sirius satellite radio capability too. The only option ours doesn't have is AWD. There are only 2 things I don't like about it:

The front brake dust it makes is horrible. This is common on all Escapes, Tributes, and Mariners which are all basicly the same vehicle. This can be fixed with better brake pads and if ours wasn't a lease I would change them.

The HVAC fan doesn't seem suitably sized for the vehicle. You have to keep the MAX AC on full blast on a hot day to keep the interior bearably cool. We took it back once but they said it was right where it needed to be, 48 or so degrees out the vents so it's not an AC problem. I'm sure it doesn't help that ours is dark grey and has a black leather interior though. Our neighbors '05 Esacpe has the same 2 issues. I can freeze the heck out of us in my Ranger although it has a much smaller interior space to heat/cool.

Besides that, the only thing I can think of is that I sometimes accidently bump the seat heater button on the way in and out of it and wonder why my butt and back are so hot until I notice the button is lit...lol!! They are great vehicles, you'll be very happy with it. When the lease is up on it in a few years we will probably go with a Ford Edge unless a Mercury version is out by then. I love the Lincoln MKX (?) version but we can't afford that!

the sway bar is always breaking on my moms 05. not the bar itself.. but the endlinks. always breaking. she went through 6 of em before I took the whole thing off. lol.. next day she says.. it rides much nicer what did you do.. I showed her the sawzall and the pile of ranger parts in my bed.... she did not find that funny.

anyway.. look out for that sneaky sway bar... other than that no problems. had a couple brake recalls.. but no biggy.

We have an 06 XLT with the 4 cyl. The wife LOVES it. So far, no major issues...except the same complaint about the A/C not big enough. When we got ours, there was a 5 yr/100,000 mi bumper-bumper available. We got the dealer down to $700 for the warranty, so needless to say, we took it.
