dumb question about gas saving with a 4 banger

Now ive head both ways...but is a 4-cyl. ranger better on gas than a 4.0 vg ranger? it sounds stupid but ive been in a couple arguments about it today and im wondering cuz i want a 2wd regular cab ranger with a 2.3 i think thats automatic or standard for gas saving cuz im spending 13-15 bucks a day on gas and im lookin for a cheap ranger for gas. is it a good idea or not? i dont want a car again after having a truck. what kinda gas millage does a 4 banger get? thanx

a 4 cyclinder manual is going to be better on gas then a 4.0l
it all depends on how you drive to.

a 4cyl definatly gets better gas mileage than a 4.0. There may be a few people that can get around 20mpg with their 4.0, but thats most likely all highway, and takeing it real easy. I get about 22mpg with my 4cyl, and im not even trying. I got 26 one time and thats not all highway either, but I took it real easy.

and you have an extended cab which means you probably have a 19-20 gal tank........I have a 16-17 gal tank and easily get 330 miles a tank.

I have an extended cab 4 cyclinder ranger, and I can definately say you will get better mileage. I do mostly all in town driving and I get around 17mpg. Havent done huge highway trips but you can definately see up to 20, maybe 21 or 22..

Why would you trade your 2002 for a 93? Just to get lowered?

My 2.3 5speed man. gets good milage. i drive like a friggin nutcase and i get 385-400+ miles per tank. But than again ive modified my truck to no end as well. a lower (Numericly higher) Gear ration SOUNDS bad for gas with a 2.3 but its better when you think about the fact that your 5th gear is actually USABLE now. so your in it more often and 5th gear is supposed to be used as an O-Drive by dropping the rpms by around 30% of that in 4th. so with the lower gear you can use it to drive. because befor i could only use it to cruise on flat land or id lose speed otherwise. now i can go faster :)

But i wont lie. most of the time im wishing i had a 4.0 but as it is im happy.

Edit: I just did some math and found out my gas tank is roughly 15.5 or so gallons. and i get 400 miles to a tank, 27 MPG average (Between highway and street) with a gear ration of 4.56 and tires size of 31x10.50x15 and a manual tranny. each tank (If bone dry empty) can cost me around $41.70 (87 Octane at $2.78 a gallon.) or $44.85 (91 Octane at $2.99) and im not sure how much my MPG will be on 91 yet still gotta run though the tank but it should be a little bit higher as well as the total miles per tank do to the fuel having more powerful Combustion ratio compared to 87 = less fuel to produce the same power requiring less gas to reach 65PMH.

I drive my '94 2.3L 5 spd the most, its gotten as high as 27 mpg on the highway and as low as 18 mpg with the air on towing a small boat.
It would probably do better with a lower gear in the rear, the way it is now, 5th gear is almost not usable. I'd like to swap in a 3.73 8.8" rear if I happened on one.
General all around driving usually yields me about 273 to 311 miles per gallon, depending on the ration of highway to around town driving and how much towing I've been doing.

My 1994 2.3T gets ~27mpg if driven easily. Hell I usually get ~23mpg with it and thats flogging the crap out of it, thats 70% city 30% highway miles too. Its a standard cab long bed too.

My 2005 standard cab short bed 2.3 achieved a high of 32mpg on the highway, and usually averaged 29mpg. That was 90% highway 10% city driving.

My 2007 4X4 4.0 gets 15-16mpg 100% city driving.
