What's that noise?
Evening all,
Truck: 1999 Ford Ranger XLT.
Engine: 3.0 Liter
Transmission: Standard
Brake system: Rear anti-lock brakes
Mileage: 150,000
Problem:
A ticking sound similar to the anti-lock brake sound is heard everytime I apply the brakes, but quits at or below 35 mph. I have replaced the rear anti-lock brake sensor in the differential, but that didn't fix it. I was suggested that maybe the speedodometer cable was dry. When I replaced the gauge cluster bulbe, I was surprised it did not have a cable to the back of the cluster, just 5 electrical connectors.
What do you think it could be?
Thanks in advance for all replies.

Sir,
It's not loud and it seems to emanate from under the floorboard below the pedals. It does not appear to come from under the dash, like it could be the anti-lock brake module. For some odd reason I keep believing it is linked to the anti-lock brakes. One and only one time the anti-lock brake lock came on while driving. I reached my destination, turned the truck off. When I left for home the light was off and never came on again. The light comes on at start-up then goes out as normal.

Since you are hearing noise, my guess is that it's related to pads or shoes.
Your rear brake shoes may be out of adjustment. They are supposed to self-adjust when you brake while moving in reverse, but age/improper installation can cause them to not work right. When the shoes are out of adjustment they can sometimes make a noise like you describe.
