changing tranny fluid?

bought a stick shift 1994 supercab 3.0 ranger 4x4.

got 163,000 miles on it and was thinking of changing the tranny fluid in it.

Basically you just undo the upper bolt and reach in to see if the fluid is at the correct level awhen filling, correct?

what should i replace the old stuff with, gear oil?

these trannies use dexron/mercon III ATF, yes ATF. when you fill it, just fill it till it starts coming out the fill hole and then stick the plug back in.

if you found the fill plug, look down and right on the driverside of the transmission, just below the fill plug and its labeled DRAIN.

Yes ATF in a manual, I said the same thing.

Any Mobil 1 ATF ? IDK I turned it over and it said equal to or replaces dexron III/mercon which is what OEM is so if the back label say that you got the right stuff, maybe there all like that IDK.

I just did mine a few months ago. I filled it up with Mobil 1 full syn. I never noticed any noise in the tranny for it to quiet down, I have no idea what people are talking about when they say that. maybe my stereo is up to loud. Anyway Mobil 1 full syn is only a couple dollars more and it should only be a couple quarts. I personally would spend the extra money for the extra protection, and you got alot of miles on it so you need all the protection you can get.

now i heard a rumor that if you have been using regular for a long time, it is not a good idea to switch to synthetic. any opinions......?

I think Mercon is a syn blend already. It shouldnt hurt the trans to go full syn.

wont take it for a test drive until morning....i am sure i wont notice anything but atleast it in changed with 163,000 miles on her.
