is it my starter??

changed the oil and topped off some fluid tonight, went to the gas station to fill er up and put in some fuel injector cleaner and then got in the truck and *CLICK* *CLICK* *CLICK* *CLICK*. and so, like maybe a like half a second apart. its not the battery, but its never done this before. I assume its the strarter cause it doesnt turn at all...

Im hoping MAYBE its just something I am looking over, but I cant think of anything.

02 ranger with a 4.0l V6 SOHC...

that usually means there isnt enough cranking amps in the battery and it isnt turning over the starter.. do a load test on the battery.. its cheap and quick way to find out..

Take a hammer and lightly tap the starter housing a few times.Don't hit it as though you're mad at it.It could be a brush stuck from condensation and cold weather.

my money is on a bad battery

and please dont take advice above

x2,

the *click, click, click* noise you are hearing is the starter trying to turn the engine over, but it sounds like the battery doesnt have enough power to do so. I would say check your battery and you'll probably find out that it is in need of a charge or replacement.

I had the same exact problem, never had a problem, turned the truck off, went to crank it back and click, click, click. Turned out it was the battery, I thought it was the starter as well.

Same problem different solution

Had the same deal, click when I went to start. BRAND NEW BATTERY! Try using a set of jumper cables, but instead of jumping the battery, hook up the positive to the postive on the battery, then take the other end of the positive and touch the starter side of the starter relay. If it cranks, maybe the relay is bad or maybe the wiring to the relay is bad. Mine fired right up and I haven't had the problem since.

cool, I will check those things out. I REALLY dont think its the battery, Ive never had one problem with it. it didnt even do a slight turn like the battery was running out of power...

im gonna tighten the ground and try to jump it, then if no go I will pull the starter and battery and get them tested.

Ill let you know what it is....

I vote battery, followed by starter relay. I doubt it's the starter, although it may be a loose connection to the starter!
