Considering buying
Hey everyone,
I am strongly considering trading in my 330i BMW for an 02 Ford Ranger FX4 they have at my local dealership. It has a bit over 80k on it, but seems mechanically sound. It has an accident history...front bumper damage and the air bag deployed but it was repaired.
Anyway, I really want a truck...but this BMW has been very reliable to me. This is my first truck and I know nothing about Ranger maintainence. Could anyone give me some information on the longevity and reliability of these trucks? Thanks to anyone helping out!

If it is manual transmission with manual transfer case I say go for it. The autos are not nearly as desirable and have known rear end issues which result in the limited slip differential that causes it to "grenade" and make the vehicle undriveable. The manuals also had this issue but were recalled and has new rear ends put in.

as far as longevity it's all about maintenance.
next time you hear it running listen closely to the engine bay for a chain rattling sound. if it has a heavy chain rattling sound the timing chain tensioners are going bad. that is the number 1 killer of 01-02 4.0 Rangers.

If your not plagued by a chain issue, and you keep up on regular maintenance, your ranger could last a while, i'd assume it has a 4.0 in it? some guys on here have a TON of miles on there 4.0. i've got 170k or so on mine, and the only thing wrong with it is a slight lifter tick from when the previous owner ran it a little low on oil once.

they are great engines.
you might have some issues with the tranny and tcase though. with 85k the clutch will be due soon and the manual t-cases on 02-03 FX4 have some sort of binding issue or something. i've heard about it but no details.

1 owner, never been in an accident...
What do you all think?

I am on my second ranger, 1st was an 04 2wd 3.0 5 speed manual with a stepside. I could get 25-26 mpg with it all day long. After a job change and commuting 50 miles each way on countyroads I knew I would need 4wd for winter driving , I found a 07 reg cab xl 4wd 3.0 5 speed manual with 12k miles. mpg's on the new truck are about 21.
reliability......I also own a BMW Z4..... my ranger's have been more reliable than the BMW
