im looking to improve the off road performance of my two wheel drive ranger and i am stuck with it so do not tell me to buy a 4x4. i was thinking of a locker, specifically a power trax lock-right. this truck is my daily driver so i need something that can be driven on the roads and highways as well. just asking for some advice.

 

What are you willing to spend?

 

price is not really the problem ill shell out the cash to get the performance and features im looking for

 

Have you checked out ARB air lockers?

 

If you've got the cash I'd go with a selectable such as the ARB. Selectable has the advantage of being exactly like stock when not engaged, fully locked when you want it. If you want to spend about half as much I'd go with the Powertrax as they aren't as noisy as other lunchbox lockers. Downside to lunchbox lockers is they will engage on their own which will cause some noise while turning and a little getting used to on snow/ice.

Just look on the door jam for the sticker with the vin. it should say "AXLE"

Switchable IS the only way to go in a 2wd very light pickup.
If you put in a locker that is locked all the time, your wet road conditions will be just short of hell on wheel.
While taking a corner and if you happen to apply power and the wheels happen to break loose, the back end of the truck will start to come around. With an open diff one wheel is static going forward so if the other wheel starts to spin then you don’t have the situation as if both wheels are spinning where there is no friction on the road and the back end starts to move.

The switchable locker, ARB and Ox Locker, are more money, yes but IMHO safer to drive.

 

Eaton e locker is also a very good altertive, lunch box type of locker is not very good at all any place where you will see snow in the rear end of your truck. Better be willing to shell out at least a grand tho. Good luck

as a more cost effective alturnative, I am very happy with my auburn ECTED, it is a full time limited slip with an electronic 'lock" that ramps the clutches together and locks the axle. I have 20k on mine now and it has been great on and offroad. they also run around 550 or so
