Dash light help

I have a 99 ranger. dash lights was working yesterday. today there not. replaced the 15 amp fuse & went out immediately. Tried a 20 with the same results. Anyone have any common ranger dash light fix or do i have to do a process of elimination? Any help is welcome. I'm not looking forward getting under the dash, if i still can.
Thanks:

Means there is a short somewhere in your dash. have you messed with any of the wires lately?

All of the exterior running lights (not headlights) are on the same fuse as the dash illumination. So you may need to expand your search to also include circuits powered through the solid brown wire front and rear - parking lights, corner markers, taillights, license plate lights, dimming module, park lamps relay.
