Mentor man trapped under vehicle for 30 minutes, arm crushed
Published: Friday, September 24, 2010

By News-Herald staff

A Mentor man had his arm crushed beneath his vehicle when it fell from its jack.

The 32-year-old man was working on his car Thursday evening at his home in the 7500 block of Little Mountain Road, Mentor Fire Lt. Ron Zak said.

The car fell from its jack and landed on his arm. Zak said the man was trapped for at least 30 minutes before his family saw him.

His family called for help and Mentor firefighters took him to Lake West Medical Center in Willoughby. From there, he was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

The man’s name has not been released, and his condition is unknown.

Loosing blood circulation in your arm for that long cant be good. At least it didnt happen in a junk yard.

Yep, he may lose his arm by trying to save $10 on an oil change.

Never get under a car support by only a jack. Says it on your car, in your manual, on your jack, on your jack stands...........

I don't need to "beware"....I'm not stupid enough to allow what happened to him happen to me.

It's his own damn fault for being stupid getting under a vehicle just held up by a jack. Jackstands have a purpose. Use 'em!!

Add wheel chocks to the list of things that need used in conjunction with jackstands.

10 bucks is 10 bucks, id rather do it myself and loose my arm.

you say do it yourselfers....

if i paid some mechanic to fix my diesel it would still be in the shop and my bill would be thousands of dollars. screw that. everything has its time and place, if the truck falls on me and kills me it must have been my time.

Please.

My little (only) brother was killed on Feb 17, 2000 when the car he was working on fell on top of him. Apparently he thought he was safe by adding a second 'backup' jack.

Feb 17, 2000 is the day I tried to call to tell him I was going to have a baby. I never got to tell him.

He left behind a 6 month old daughter of his own...

Please, use them.

dont put the jackstands on the freakin control arms either. ive seen this soooooo many times its ridiculous. just in case noobs dont know, control arms move. support the vehicle by jackstands on a crossmember or the frame. youd be surprised how many idiots do this. so frustrating

I put my jackstands on the control arms most of the time, I dont see what the big deal is? Especially since I really cant even put them on the crossmember since it isn't wide enough to fit the jack and jackstands under, and the control arms have tabs for jackstands to go.

Same here, i have a solid 2 feet of room haha.

I don't like using tall jackstands either cause i feel they will be unbalanced. Here's what I usually do, i have tons of blocks of wood laying around.

Also the splitting wedge is for when i do get trapped i can just chop off my arm or leg or whatever. I actually used that in installing my lift. I have no idea how i managed to jack the truck that high to put it on jackstands though..

DITTO.

Wider the better right?? My pic has stands at the outer most spot you can put stands, right by the BJ and right by the leaf. Yes it moves, yes it's on the suspension. No, I'm not stupid.

I just had a bunch of work done to my truck. Oil change, new battery, new front brake pads, steering stabalizer link pins, wheel bearing re-packed with grease, and luckily I had the money to have it done professionally by a mechanics with professional lifts and tools. Nobody got hurt, I didn't lose any body parts, it cost me a few bucks but so what, it's all done now, and it's all done right.

a guy passed a little while back on honda-tech, was swapping diffs on his s2k, with the rear supported by 2 jackstands. the car fell, pierced his lung, and he basically drowned under his car for a half hour before anyone realized what had happened.

gotta be a messed up way to go, slowly having your pride and joy bleed and squeeze the life out of you while you stare helplessly back at it
