It gets nasty. You want something easy to clean on that.

im using black velvet in my truck, lol.
so far, i've done the glove box, passengerside airbag cover, and parts of my sub box. i've bought enough material to do the headliner, visors, and parts of the door panels, plus part of the center console, once i figure out it's design and build it.
but yeah, unfortunately, the material isnt durable at all really. im kinda on the verge of scratching the velvet idea and going with suede for everything instead now.(i prefer the feel of velvet to suede, which is why i went with it instead). and yes, it does damage kinda easily (main reason why i might redo everything in suede). something random like a book's corner, or something like that, could damage the material if it happened to scrape along it just right. i don't know how well it will hold up in bad weather conditions either (say it happens to get splashed by rain water as i get in/out of the truck, etc...).
anyways tho.. it's an easy material, and looks nice/feels nice, but, durabilty just plain sucks.
so, with all of that mentioned, if you do want to use the material, i'd say doing the headliner and visors would be safe and fine. doing the center console though, i dont know..... i think the material would take a beating on the console.

On the other hand though, if you were lowering it and going that route, it probably wouldn't look bad, but Shalafi is right about needing something easy to clean.
