Automatic Transmission

I have a 2002 Ranger with a 4 cylinder engine and an automatic transmission, Yesterday I drove about 75 miles for work in the morning. After driving around doing work errands I started to head back, I was driving about 65 MPH when it suddenly dropped out of top gear and I could not get it to go back, and the O/D off light started to flash. I had 1st and 2nd gears but no 3rd. I was able to get it to a transmission place and they told me it had to be completely rebuilt at a cost of 1400.00, I couldn't afford this right now and was able to get it home. This afternoon I took it for a ride after sitting all night and most of today and it ran fine and shifted beautifully. Now I didn't run it till it was warm again, but was curious. Does anyone know these transmissions, and do you really think it needs a total rebuild, or could it be something simpler that I might be able to afford. Any info would be appreciated.
Thank You
fyr
P.S. yes I did check the fluid and level was good. Transmission has never leaked.
