Driving in sand?

ok, i have searched the forum for driving on the beach tips....cant really find any....

ok i seen there's a ranger meet at oregon inlet in july...looks like i want make this one, but most definitly the next one!!! (i gotta save for me and the gf's beach trip in august!)

as before, im taking the gf to nags head in august like we do every year...previously ive always had the 94' 2WD reg cap 2.3L when we go; so no beach driving for me. NOW i have the 06' supercab 4WD....soooo im most difinitly going to oregon inlet...! problem is even though i uses to live on the beach right down the road from oregon inlet, ive NEVER driven on the beach....in sand...

sooo guys i know this may sound stupid...but i need help...need some tips on driving on the beach...

i know a few such as try to stay on previous tracks and to let air out of the tires....but i need some more tips and techniques.

1) i have 255/70 R16.....what tire pressure should i deflate too if any....
2) do i use 4wd Hich or 4wd Low and do i put the truck in "D" or 1 or 2 or what gear....(i have auto tranny)?
3) so i follow others tracks, or use my own...?
someone please help....

def run a lower pressure. try about 10-15 psi all around to start. you will have to be the judge on whether you need more or less. when im in the sand i like to put it in 4low and keep it in second gear (auto). avoid slamming on your brakes or mashing on the gas too hard, both of those could bury you a bit. you shouldnt have any issues, my truck did just fine in the sand in stock trim, just be smart about it.

i would say run like 10psi, stay away from the tide!! probably keep in tire tracks, if you do stop on soft stuff, start off as easy as you can. if you start digging down, stop and get help haha

want to explain why?
more torque, easier to spin the tires and dig. i would want high wheel speed to haul ***

i use 4low becuase its just easier on the transmission. a long day in the sand can really get the heat build up in the auto trans. 4low in second gear helps that.

Be careful deflating below 10PSI. You can damage the inner sidewalls of your tires, damage that will not be visible on the outside of the tire. This can lead to a blow out down the road.

I run in 4hi on the sand, no need for 4lo.

Also run to about 15-18 psi if your not gonna play around.

Leave it in 4wd the whole time and just do soft starts.

i just google it also, have yall ever seen the brick technique?

it sys to park on level ground and the to place a ***** on the tire treads 1 cm away from the sidewall. then deflate until sidewall just touches the brick...then measure tire pressure, they said this was a good statring point, from what ive gathered, just deflate to 15psi, and that should be good...

also, i have nor reached a majority on the gear and transfer case selection...

some are saying 4 lo, some say 4 high, most are saying 2nd gear....

remember guys, most of ya'll have lifts and bigger and wider tires...i am running stock 255/70R16...basically a 31" tire....

doesn't matter what you have.

RUN 4HI

Put it in Drive

Deflate to 15psi

You will be fine.

x2. i use 4lo because i like to, transfer case gear is personal preference. most important thing is the lower tire pressure.

I should have specified that, you can run 4lo but its not needed at all. (IMO)

it'll depends on where you're going out at nags head.

corolla has really hard sand and i've seen cars out on it. Talk to mossyoak03 (Marcus) he goes there alot.

if you go to Oregon inlet, you'll need to be careful because there's alot of soft sand.... but plenty of tracks from other people to make it easier to drive on. I had BFG M/T so I didn't even notice.

if you head down to hatteras island, i've been down there twice with the same set up as you... the sand wasn't bad so i didn't deflate the tires at all. i'd never been on sand so i didn't know how to drive.... so i didn't deflate, 4hi, and 2nd gear.

Good thread, I'm going down to Oregon Inlet in a few weeks to break my beach driving cherry lol. Should be fun, I plan on airing down to 15psi just to be safe.

i was just there this past weekend. i didn't put my truck in 4wd but once and that was the entrance where everyone gets stuck. you can keep your truck in 2wd and when you feel like your bogging down just flip it to 4wd. i have never aired down my tires when i go to the beach either but if you do the fishing center right across from the entrance has air to fill you back up.

the only place that i found that didn't have air inflate things is at the Cape Hatteras light house camping area in Buxton. The closest one from there was about 2mi away.

Do you still have the goodyear rt/s tires that were stock on it? If so I'd get some new meaties before I went anywhere I didn't want to get stuck.

aired up rt/s in soft sand= FAIL. especially with a heavy truck like an F-150.

the main entrance is right there across from the fishing center, is that the one youre talking about where most get stuck...?
