"Specialty" Oil... Is it worth it?
Hey, I have always kind of been dazed by the number of "Specialty " oils there are out on the market and was wondering if this stuff was any different than the normal stuff. I am getting ready to change my oil within a few hundred miles and was looking into the high mileage oil. My truck has around 88k miles and was wondering if this stuff really helps?
Thanks,
Chris

If you have a leak it may actually be plugged by all the gunk from your old oil. The deal with synthetic is it's so fine that it will actually clean out the dirt and grime from the leak, and then it starts seaping out. I found that it's best to only use synthetic if it's a fairly new engine. There's no way I'd use it on my 94. I used it on a 5yr old Cavi and it started leaking.

Personally I'd stick with 3000 mile changes and a good cheap oil
such as havoline 10w30 (maybe 5w30 in cold part of winter)
There are quality products to gently clean out your engine and condition your seals
one of the most highly thought of is called auto-rx. Its only available online.
If you want to learn more about it you could do a search on
www.bobistheoilguy.com Its talked about 100x a day over there.
I have used it .. seems to be a good product.
You might consider running a 15w40 oil such as chevron delo 400, mobil delvac 1300
or rotella T.. These are Heavy duty diesel (also gas rated) oils that have extra
detergents and such. Although I wouldnt run them anything the temp is going to be below 20degrees.(these oils work best with auto-rx if you use that)

Disclaimer: I am in no way affilated with anything mentioned above.. just some
info from me :)

its all the condition of the engine. And it doesnt have to be amsoil. i dont know why people are afraid to use a better oil. you look for the best tires and the best air filter, hell you drive an extra mile for the best gas, but you dont care about the oil?

So much to reply to!
There is no way on earth I'd use the same oil for 25k. I understand there is research to back it up etc... but there is research saying cell phones cause cancer and there is research saying that's idiotic. Amsoil is good, don't get me wrong. I'm glad to have it in my truck but no way I'll be comfortable using it for 25k at this point. What I will do tho is next week change the filter and send a sample of the oil off to blackstonelabs to get it tested (as I do with every oil change). If they say it's still good then I'll use it longer, other wise I'll change it out. I will post the results here of course :)
Uh..that just doesn't make any sense. Less friction = less heat = less wear...whatever..have fun with all that.
There is research showing it's far superior to other oils. Bob is pushing it because he believes in it, not because he sells it. He makes so little off of it because of the great prices he gives he could barely fill his gas tank once. He believes in it and is sharing what he believes. Other people have said they use it. No one is saying (that I can see) you HAVE TO BY AMSOIL or your engine will blow up!!! No one is pushing anything except possibly Bob but as I mentioned that's because he believes in it and can help you get it. So simma down.
That is an excellent resource! I love that site. Tons of info available!
