tailpipe.. or no tailpipe??

so.. i just got a flowmaster 40 series installed, and it dumps off right after the muffler.
and it is really loud.

my question is..
which is better performance-wise? dumping it off or having the tailpipe?
i know that if i get the tailpipe put on it will be a tad bit quieter, but will i lose or gain performance?

I had mine going out the tail under the bumper from two 3" slash cut chrome tips. Years of hard abuse and trailriding broke one hanger so many times I got frustrated and cut the tail-pipes off after the muffler.

I couldn't tell any bit of difference in performance. However, the SOUND is incredible. Before I dumped it, it was loud, but more so OUTSIDE the truck than in. Now it's equal throughout...if I get on it, I'm gonna hear it and they will too....

cool. thanks.
i think i'm just going to leave the tailpipe off because i don't want to bend it while offroading like i did my stock one.

Technically performance will be better with the tails out the back, but the amount you'd gain would be so small you'd never notice, nor is it worth the money.

um, actually, screw performance and sounding of the exhaust, its down right DANGEROUS to dump your exhaust under your vehical. theres a reason that all cars have and exhaust pipe the pushes the exhaust out the back or side of the car and not under it. when you dump under the car, you have a real possibility of getting carbon monoxide poisening, which is colorless, and u cant smell it, and ull be dead by the time u realise your getting poisened by it.

in a situation like this, safety is more important than a few decibals to sound cool. be safe, dump ur exhaust on the OUTSIDE of your vehical, NOT under it.

btw: 800th post =D

Actually it usually gets dumped UNDER the bed, and I havent gotten CO poisoning in the 2.5 years that i've had my exhaust setup. Also I believe a lot of muscle cars dump their exhausts, so it obviously isnt a safety issue.

i still wouldnt trust it, like if ur sitting and idling for awhile it has the possibility of leaking into the cab.
