Hey guys,

I have an '09 XLT and have installed oem power steering & transmission coolers, rear sway bar, Torsen 3rd member, Edelbrock shocks & a KN filter. It has the factory class III hitch and flat4 electrical connection

What else do you think might be needed to safely tow a 1800# (dry) pop up rv trailer with electric brakes.

nothing. 1800lbs is well within the towing limits of your truck. imo the ebrakes are a little much but having and not needed is better then needing and not having.

also just saying "09 XLT" doesn't tell us what engine you have. with a trans cooler i'm assuming an auto.
make a signature. it's easy to do and makes things easier on us when diagnosis is needed on your truck.

 

You'll need a brake controller.

 

Brake controller and wiring for a 7 pin plug. The truck should pull fine unless you have oversized tires. The auto trans actually tows better than manual in a Ranger but either will work.

I would for sure use the electric trailer brakes though. Ranger brakes suck *** alone, and they REALLY suck when you are towing something without brakes.

the '09 has a 2.3 and is rated to haul 2300#s without all the mods or brakes on the rv

a Hensley Silver II brake controller w/ a 7 pin plug & a small (100-400#) Reece WD hitch is in the works as well.

Get a Prodigy brake controller online. Around 100 bucks, rave reviews from most all users. For you weight you're pulling you don't need the WD hitch at all.

 

I agree you really shouldn't need any weight distribution with that little trailer. With the 4cyl you aren't going to be going anywhere in a hurry.

I have a prodigy brake controller and love it, for what it's worth.

the reason I'm going with the Hensley is that it doubles the amps of the Prodigy and does't need to be leveled so more mounting options

the overall trailer length is 22' with a hitch weight of 240#'s & is 66" tall folded so I thought a WD hitch with sway control would give me a larger margin of safety in cross winds. Don't want to end up with "the tail wagging the dog".

I realize the limitations of 145hp, but as long as the rig will maintain 55-60 on the flats that's fine with me

 

I wouldn't be worried about the amp rating at all. And the Prodigy can be mounted anywhere if I remember correctly.

For that length I would say the sway control is a good move.
