Well, I'm impressed...NO CARDBOARD!!!

I was curious, so I cut one open and the Indonesian Fram looks very much like this:

...I'll try to post images tomorrow.

About 25 years ago I cut apart about 6-7 different oil filter types. And the Fram I cut apart then looks almost the same as in these pictures - except it had a string tied around the pleated element to hold it together! That was the last time I used a Fram oil filter.

i used to run fram on my s-10, i put a new oil pump in it when i did the motor and i blew 4 or 5 frams apart at the crimped seam from 80psi of oil pressure. i also had problems taking them off. they will spin at the seam and not unscrew from the base, i see that alot at work

The survey says: A much better Fram filter is still a Fram filter.

Seems like in most cases you'll get the basic cardboard and glue constructed filter, but if you have a 2.3 Duratec...you lucked out. You get a coil tension spring, a much heavier base plate, metal end caps on the filter media, and like in the Purolator: Seems to have "many more pleats than any other" especially when compared to the Wix filter shown in the photo.

Anyway, I have 8 Motorcraft FL910's in my cabinet and when those are gone I may use the Fram, if they keep the cardboard out.

Looks pretty good to me:

I'd say it compares to, or dare I say looks even better than, the premium filters listed below - can't believe the Wix filter media has so few pleats and has such a small surface area.

So how do you know the good fram filters from the bad? Does the box say made in indonesia?

Box has "Made in Indonesia" on it and photo on box doesn't have the black textured end on filter. Other PN's may be boxed differently, but that's the way the 2.3 Duratec is boxed and built for now.

Looks like the "good" filter (for this particular application) is being discontinued.

Autozone: "Notes: Available until stock is depleted"

- replacement PN is PH3614 & TG3614 in the Fram, same filter fits an '08 Tacoma.

i remember a few years back that Wix had a display for auto stores that showed how much better their filters worked compared to Fram.

the suits at Fram had Wix recall all the displays because the results were so overwhelming

i will NEVER put a fram on any vehicle

and since i work at an autoparts store, if someone asks which is better i will always offer wix or motorcraft.
if they are stupid enough to ask for Fram.....they can have it, they're mostly ricers and dumb rednecks with chevys so i don't care and i won't stop them.
