Fuel Cap

i took my ranger to get state inspection pass but not the Fuel cap the guy there told me to just get a new one i asked him what is the problem with the one it has? it did not pass the test. My Q is there has to a vacuum inside the gas tank or not or is it pressure i know that my dads F150 and my cousin mustang makes a sound of the air going in or out when you go get gas because my ranger does not

The tank does have a vacuum inside. You should be getting a CEL if theres a vacumn leak though. I'd just go buy the cap so you can pass inspection or take it to a different place to get it inspected and see what they say.

When the engine is running, the tank can have positive pressure or vacuum or be at atmospheric. When the engine is off, it is more likely to have positive pressure caused by the vapor pressure of the fuel.

I don't know what criteria the inspector was using. Maybe he found a tank leak code stored in the PCM memory.

Why not just use the old cap again? If the strap is that much of a concern that is. Then when you have to go do inspection again, just swap to the other cap and pass again.
