Hey guys, I got a question. I recently painted my brake drums. It's been about a month since I painted them and they are chipping like crazy. How can I get a longer lasting finished product? I used caliber paint and did three coats. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

 

Switch to a disc rear end.

But it sounds like it wasn't prepped right. All the rust should be ground off, so it's best to start with new drums. Also, soak them in solvent, there is always grease on them and the craptastic brake cleaner NJ forces us to buy is non chlorinated which sucks and couldn't take grease off anything.

I've never had a problem with duplicolor's caliper paint, I did my rear calipers recently and they look great. My cars are 3 years old and still good, beside being dirty.

I sprayed mine with normal spray paint when i painted my axle.I figured it would flake off from the heat but its still holding.

 

I did use brand new drums. I didn't really think I would have to prep very much, I just wiped them down really good and sprayed.

 

New drums are coated in oil, it takes a lot to get that stuff off.

 

How should I go about getting them clean?

 

a good brake and parts cleaner usually does that job, if not look for something designed to cut and fight grease.

I used rust oleum rusty metal primer (brown) then top coated with 2 coats of regular rustolem gloss (gloss) brushed it on. After 7 years its still holding strong.
