Trip to the stealership...
So I droped my truck off at the dealership last sunday (march, 7) so they can fix a couple things while I am on the road this week. The things that needed to be fixed were the horn, speedo, backup lights, extra key made, and the headlights to be leveled. Well I got a call yesterday from them saying that the reason the speedo doesnt work is because the gauge cluster and computer went out and that they will replace it for $600. So I figured, f*ck, if im paying $600 to replace the cluster, why not get one with a tachometer? So I asked the guy about it and he says that its impossible to get a cluster for a 99 with a tach. I told him that I had seen a couple of you guys on here that have them in your 4th gens. He said that in order to do such a thing, they would need to put a new harness into my truck.
Long story short, what is a harness and are they just BSing me?

Donno. We (being me and my grandpa) think that it blew out while the other guy owned it. And we were in too much of a rush to buy it that we didnt take it for a test drive. Of course the guy swears up and down that when he drove it over to our house it worked just fine. Its anyones guess now.

probably the reason why the cluster is so much at the dealership is that they would have to set your odometer to the proper reading. a gm dealer gave the same crap to a guy i know with a 2500hd, the cluster was expensive and then on top of that he HAD to pay them to fix the odometer
FX4Wannabe01 has a writeup on how to change the odometer.

Dealerships know nothing when it comes to modifying or swapping parts. If the part numbers don't match the VIN, then to them, the part won't fit or work.
Go buy a used cluster from a wreckers or something and put it in. As for the rest of the work, you can do all that stuff yourself except make the key.
You're throwing your money away.

Reid, I'm not going to hammer on you too much.. but they have earned the name "stealership" for a reason.
Don't go there. It's the same mentality for our crooked public officials. Yet.. we keep on electing them into office. Can we really be supprised?
IMO, if the truck is running.. get out of the situation with as little cost as you can.
Then post up and we'll help.
