how much should i ask?
i had someone ask to buy my ranger, but they failed to mention a price point. after looking online at kbb i have a decent idea of the value, but what should i tell the guy? its an 85, and he seems to want it due to its rarity.. he says he wants to trick it out for competitions.
the truck was a work truck. the previous owner bought it new and it has had only motorcraft parts, runs like a champ (with only minor leakage). its the 2.3 v4 AWD

Welcome to the forum
So buyer wants you to set the asking price for a vehicle that is not for sale?
Not the way it works.
Up to him to give you a bid, then you can either take it or set an asking price, if it is indeed for sale.
If you need a small pickup then you should look at what the cost is to replace it, not specific to the year or model, just a small pickup that suits your needs, or say "it's not for sale", at that price.
Ultimately the buyer always sets the value for something that is for sale.
Asking price is just that, asking, not getting, so not a true value until is it sold, then the value is established.
Looking at "For Sale" ads for similar products/trucks gives you an idea of what sellers "think" their product is worth, but it is just an asking price, not a value.

^ What he said. ^
If this guy really wants to buy your truck, he'll approach you and say "I'll give you $xxxx for your truck." Then you decide if it's fair.
It sounds to me like he may want to buy it, but he's hoping you have no clue how much it's worth, and he'll get off with a steal of a price. Make him offer you a price first.
