New law for New York drivers

violation of this law is a punishable by a fine of up to $275, plus mandatory court surcharges. It will also result in two points on the driver’s license record.

NEW YORK STATE LAW:

Ambrose-Searles ‘Move Over Act’

Protects law enforcement officers and emergency workers stopped along roadways while performing their duties.

• Drivers must use due care when approaching an emergency vehicle that displays red and/or white emergency lighting.

• On all roads and highways, drivers must reduce speed;

• On Parkways and other controlled access highways with multiple lanes, drivers must move from the lane immediately adjacent to the emergency vehicle, unless traffic or other hazards exist to prevent doing so safely.

Newzjunky - Drivers Beware: Ambrose-Searles Move Over Act to Begin Jan. 1

Law takes effect Jan. 1 , 2011

well thats how it is in pa they don't really bother coming after you if you don't get over on a highway, never wanted to test out to see what they do if you fly past them on a 2 lane road when they have someone pulled over though.

It's about time. So many idiots don't understand this, and so many places are SO slow in enforcing it.

Years and years ago Oregon started doing this, and made huge efforts on busy highways to place a police car on the side of the road with his lights on, and had TONS of cops waiting on the on-ramps. Initially it was just warnings, but it got the word out because they put it all over the news. Now people there are SO much more courteous to police, ambulance, fire, etc. In Kentucky it is f-cking terrible. People will keep going when there is an ambulance approaching, they will purposely challenge then at intersections, blow by police cars on the side of the road during traffic stops....

Minnesota also has this law. I've seen cops go after cars who did not move over for a stopped maintainance truck that was helping a stranded motorist.
It's a law that has been needed for a LONG time
Minnesota has had this law since 2009

Emergency responder/vehicle or not, it's just common courtesy to get in the farthest lane (or lane over) when passing by a vehicle stopped on the side of the road.

I have been driving in NY for 10 years now and thought all along that it was a law. I did this anyway.

Exactly. I always move over a lane no matter what kind of vehicle is on the shoulder.

the law not only states that you have to move over for emergency (fire, police, ambulance) but also for "highway helper" trucks that are stopped to assist motorists and also tow trucks.
