Kayak / cargo rack for a cap?

I want to mount a rack on the top of my cap for carrying kayaks in the summer and skis in the winter. It would also be cool if it could support other uses like building supplies or a bigger canoe. Mounting lights to it would be nice too. The cap is raised higher than the cab so it has to be entirely mounted to the cap.

Anyone know of one that can be custom mounted to the surface rather than the expensive vehicle-specific ones? I'm willing to drill to mount it.

This is the cap I have (obviously not my truck)

This would be a nice way of starting out with some Yakima racks.
Yakima #6 / #7 Landing Pads for Metal Roofs & Fiberglass Camper Shells, Truck Caps, Tonneau Covers etc.
If you go with the whole system it can get a little spendy, but it's an idea.
There is also a 10% off coupon code here.
Ors Racks Direct Coupon Codes - all coupons, discounts and promo codes for orsracksdirect.com

I'm wanting to do something similar on my cap, but it has to be very low profile with the racks removed to clear the garage door.
I mostly want to be able to mount my yakima megawarrior on occasion.

Or you can use these. They don't look as nice but will work with more of the universal racks that you might find on craigslist or something.

It boggles my mind how expensive these things are. And these are really confusing. So many parts and i can't grasp wtf is for what and where.

lol
Yeah I feel the same way. I was able to mount my megawarrior directly to the factory rack on my sport trac. I can't get myself to buy all the new stuff at the prices they ask.

Here is the full setup. http://www.orsracksdirect.com/yakima...oof-racks.html
Still $299, but with free shipping and you can often find 20% off from them if you sign up for their emails. Still a lot to swallow for a rack but it is good stuff.

Salvage yard prices are MUCH cheaper. I'd go for something off an SUV or miniVan and customize it to suit your needs.

Then another $150-$200 for the actual cradles to hold the Kayak. And another $100 for the skii mounts.

I like the idea of going to a junk yard first to see if there is something I can salvage. If not I, I guess I'll have to eat it.

Its made by Jereco. So unless the Leer parts are kind a universal, it may not fit.
