I got a Question.

I picked this up on Saturday and I want to grind the Rust down and repaint it before I put it on, but I have a couple questions before I start doing that. (1) should I grind down only the rust or should I grind the whole thing? (2) What kind of black paint do I use to hold up to the different seasons of Ohio.

Here are some pics:

I usually use a wire wheel on a 5" grinder. I have the best luck with that. As for sealing, I really like Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. Use that to seal it up, then paint it black.

You could get it blasted, But, If it were me, I'd just knock the rust off and paint it.
Is there anything that will hold up to the snow and salt of ohio?

powdercoat or POR-15 will be the only thing that will really hold up to the road salt and stuff. powdercoat is expensive and POR-15 isnt cheap either ($40 a quart) and it only really adheres well to rust. id just use a wire wheel on it, prime it and rattle can it if i were you

Thanks alot guys, I'll pick up a wire wheel tom. and start on it, I'll probably need to pick up a dremel to get to the hard to get spots also. POR-15, can you get that at Advance Auto or Auto Zone?

I will look up the name at work tomorrow, but there is a guy here in Medina that powdercoats really cheap and does amazing work. The company is called Bradley Adams, but I can' t find his business card at the moment. He did a couple customers wheels and they turned out great and I think it was like 75 a wheel.

Just an FYI from someone who has done professional sandblasting, once you put a bed liner type coating on it, sandblasting it in the future is completely out of the question.

I am up in Buffalo NY and have a small sandblasting set up, if you wish to have me do it, ill blast the hitch for $20.

As far as primers, go with a rust inhibiting primer, it is absolutely imparitive you get it primed with in 30 minutes of blasting it.

I will also get that sucker CLEAN. as in BARE metal. no rust.

I grinded down all the rust today, I bought some rust preventer, rustoleum primer, and black paint that will also try to prevent rust. Dave I would take you up on that offer but it would probably cost 40 bucks just to get the hitch up there and back. Plus I want to try and get this thing on the truck by the weekend. I'll post some pics up when I'm done. Thanks again guys.
