Go to Napa, or pep boys or some sort of automotive place like that and by a can of engine degraser. You spray it on let it sit for maybe 5 min and then spray it off. Looks like brand new,

I always have the engine hot Spray it with Simple Green rinse off then take a towel and wipe clean
Cover battery
Cover distribution box that has fuses and relays in it
Cover Alternator
If you have a CAI cover remove cone filter then cover opening.

And it is engine compartment

I use Simple Green. (almost any all purpose cleaner/degreaser will do) Just dilute it according to the instructions. I spray it on a warm (NOT HOT) engine before I start washing my truck. Then go back and hose it down with the engine running. Keep the stream moving and if the engine starts to stumble, remove it immediately. Then either wipe it down or drive the truck for a bit and let the heat from the engine do it for you. If you do it the latter way it will leave some water spots though.

have the engine hot.
get like 3 or 4 cans of degreaser form autozone or something.
spray alllll over. just try no to hit alt. too much. just go to town.
after that, rinse motor off. let it dry.
spray everything with the spray can tire shine.

Take your distributor cap off and run a bead of silicone around the edge and let dry...
I did that and it allows me to hose the engine without problems.
Condensation gets in there and shorts it and eventually it wont start.

I just keep it dirty....cleaning an old engine is not a happy engine...you can break free stuff that is holding together gaskets and keeping things sealed...
Plus all that grease helps waterproof the metal.
