Introduction and pick some peoples brains

Ok guys I found this forum a couple weeks ago and have been wearing it out since. A little info for you guys. I traded for a 99 Ranger XLT a couple weeks ago. It had a few problems but nothing I didnt think I could handle. Wasnt in bad shape for a truck with 247xxx on the odometer. Since I've had it i have ordered a couple keys from Amazon had them cut and programmed at a local locksmith, since it only came with one. Put a Explorer dome light in it since the one in it was broken. Replaced all the dash lights with LEDs since have were burnt out. Warning indicator lights are on the way. Brakes all the way around, sway bar end links, oil change and filters.

Now for the brain picking part.

So sometimes it doesnt like to shift into first gear when you put it in drive. From what I read could be a valve body gasket problem. They are ordered and should be here tomorrow but its supposed to be storming here tomorrow so it might have to wait a day or 2. Today I was installing new shift tube bushings since mine were completely out of the clamps and my shifter was really loose. I noticed the horn didnt work. Checked the fuse it was good. Jumped the horn with a wire and it worked. So I'm assuming a clock spring issue. As I was looking there appears to be spots on the side of the airbag for cruise controls. Since you guys know about Rangers and Im out of the loop on them. Since my truck is a XLT would it have came with cruise? How can I tell if all of the stuff is there to make cruise work if i bought a new clock spring and the controls for cruise. No fobs came with the truck. How can I tell if i have keyless entry so i can order fobs and make that work. I didnt think any of those options were on my truck since I have crank windows. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.

Welcome to the forum

1999 Ranger
What engine, 2.5l, 3.0l or 4.0l those were the 3 options
Assume automatic
2wd or 4X4?

Look in the engine bay, if there was cruise then you would see a second throttle cable hooked up to cruise actuator(part that pulls open throttle to keep you "cruising along"

3rd party cruise can be added

Do you have power door locks?
If not then for sure no keyless entry

If so then then only a maybe with non-powered windows.
keyless entry used a RAP(Remote Anti-theft Personality) module, Ford part number F87Z-15604-AA

Google the part number to see what it looks like and where to look on a 1999 Ranger

Most automatic transmission problems come down to loss of pressure, simply because all automatics run on pressure
Reverse requires the highest pressure which is why it often has problems first.

Yes, valve body gasket did have a pressure leaking issues in the 4R and 5R Ranger transmissions.
Ford made a replacement valve body with the gasket bonded to it, which I would recommend over a new gasket only, it will probably last longer.

Sorry should have put that stuff in the original post.

4.0l
yes auto
2wd

I would post a pic of two throttle cables that I believe are what you were talking about for the cruise but I cant figure out how to get it to post in the forum.

Didnt even think about it needing power locks. Lets just forget I asked about the keyless entry lol.

If you have the cruise actuator then you have cruise control but the button pods on the steering wheel probably broke and previous owner just removed them.

It was common for them to break

Google: Ranger cruise control Pods

1999 4.0l Rangers could either have the 4R55E or 5R55E automatic, depends on the factory they were made at
On the drivers door there is a label with VIN number and other vehicle info
At the bottom you will see TRANS, letter under it will tell you what trans you have
T = 4R trans
D = 5R trans

55E were only used with 4.0l V6 engines, 44E were for 3.0l V6 and 2.3l/2.5l 4 cyl engines

Also on that same label is axle type, look here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...le_codes.shtml
Info you may want some day

Do you have power windows and mirrors? If you do then you have power locks. (*****EDIT**** just saw where you have hand crank windows, so you shouldn't have power locks but you may still be wired for cruise).

If you have these then there is a very good chance you are prewired for cruise control as well as fog lights.

Both the engine bay (not engine) harness and the dash (main) harness have to be wired for this to work.

For the engine bay harness:
Look for a module or just a connector (like 10-12 pins) attached to the inner RH fender between the blower motor and the washer fluid reservoir. This is for or is the module for the cruise system.

For the dash harness, locate the 6 cavity brown connector at the bottom of the steering column behind the knee panel. How many wires does it have? If it is like 4 or 5 you are good there. Less and you dont have it. Check both sides as one side is dash and the other is clockspring.
