uhhh....What does this do?

so I took my bed off today, pretty sure this was attached to the bottom of it and i didnt notice it til it was pulled...what is it/does it do?
it doesnt look like it connects anywhere? is it just some sorta vent line? hopefully it wasnt important haha...
its coming off the axle on the drivers side...

the help would be GREATLY appreciated since my bed is on my front lawn haha

also, on a side not, anyone know what size the gas filler neck hose is? I dont want to pull it off to measure it cos i dont think it'd ever get back on...and its stained brown so I cant rear anything on it...

thanks!

i was wondering about that on mine too, Im pretty sure it is just the vent line but I'll let someone more knowledgeable chime in. Mine is leaking where it meets the axle and that didn't start until after I changed my diff fluid recently so I'm thinking it's just runoff

it better just be a vent tube haha, thats all it looks like. Just wanna make sure first, its a lot easier to get at while the bed is off.

ES894X4 do you have the 8.8 rear end? or the 7.5? I could be wrong but I thought XLs were still 7.5 in 08

It's so when the heat from friction in the diff expands the air inside it doesn't blow the seals. the air can expand and contract with the temperature and go in and out the vent tube.

That clip near your hand should hold the open end of the vent tube higher than the diff. I haven't looked at an 08 but other years with that type of clip mounted the tube to the driver side frame rail above the axle tube. You may be able to see a witness mark on the rail where it was clipped on before.

the clip on my truck (the clip on the tube your holding) was attached where your brakelines meet the frame on the drivers side frame rail. but pretty much anywhere along your frame will work because it simply just needs to be in a place where **** wont fall into it and etc.

its the exact same as breather tubes you find on your transfer case and transmission. stuff gets hot, fluid expands outwards, hence the reason for the tube....so it has somewhere to go instead of on the ground. Plus it keeps stuff like WATER and MUD out of your axles/fluids vs not having one.

Yep on my 07 the top of it is clipped on to the inside of the frame rail. I don't know if you ever go offroad but if you do since you have to fix it anyway it would be a good time to extend it and clip it somewhere higher so you don't fill your diff with water like I did this one time when I decided to see if my truck would float..

Are you keeping your truck now? What are you doing to it with the bed off? Want to buy a bodylift? Ha, only kidding.

alright thanks guys, i shall clip it somewhere on the frame then!

Nate; yeah I'm keeping it now, after a $10,000 repair bill I'm only being offered $4,000-$7,000 for it, so screw that. might as well drive it til its dead.

atrocity yup, its an 08, the joys of the north, rust rust rust. oh yeah, and more rust! (at leastI'im assuming that's what you were referring to haha)

yeah, not to mention the de-icing spray they use, it always seems to rain when they put it down, so it just winds up all over our cars

Yeah I am currently undercoating my rusted frame. Considering it has spent almost 10 years in Northeast Ohio I am pleasantly surprised how clean it is. I still have quite a bit of the factory undercoating left.

Oh and thanks for making this thread, I kept seeing that tube and wondering where it went. Mine is always wet with something right around where it attachs to the axle.
