4WD banging sound?

We just finally got a decent amount of snow here to go play around in... so I just came in from doing that.

It's been quite a while since I put my truck in 4x4... is it normal for it to kind of "bang" when you first hit the throttle in 4wd? I also had quite a clunk while turning once... I was in a fair bit of snow so I don't think it was binding, and it was pretty slippery.

I had a similar issue it might be related. I was testing out the 4 wheel ABS on my new 99 4x4. While in 2 wheel drive I slide, while in 4wd i hear loud banging sounds but it seems to stop better. I read in my owner's manual that I should hear a loud knock, not sure if it is the same knock it is referring to. Maybe your bang is similar to mine. There might be something in your owner's manual about it. Hope this helps.

were you at a stop when engaged or was the rear spinning when you put it in 4x4?

I hope he was at a stop, I wouldn't trust on the fly at all, did it one time and that's only causing it was flooding and I was losing control. just a thought

Front CV's will crunch/pop if worn, it will feel like it's "hobbling" while turning on the throttle.

Could be the servo motor that engages the t-case is weak or not able to fully engage, and it pops into gear properly once you apply the throttle and get things moving. Mine does it occasionally, especially if I'm rushing it into 4wd. If its doing it constantly I'd be worried about it, but if its only doing it occasionally I wouldn't be too worried - especially if your 4wd is working and it is properly disengaging afterwards. Use your 4wd more often and it will probably start shifting more smoothly. LR

Thanks guys, I'll keep all this in mind. It did it every time I engaged and then accelerated. It only did it once when turning though. The u-joints aren't very old I didn't see any play there but I did notice I have some play in the telescoping part of the shaft. I was moving while switching into 4x4 but all four wheels were going the same speed.

my 99' ford ranger pops sometimes when its engaged in 4 wd, it drives a hell of alot better when its in 4wd, i have 35 inch mud tires so i think that has something to do with it but i did hear a loud popping noise while in 2wd and when i investigated the problem it ended up being the bolts that hold the brake caliper bracket on a bolt had came out and fallen out, causing the caliper to slide off the rotor, what was thought to be a 280.00 fix ended up being a 6.00 fix, maybe this will help some.

These trucks are designed to be shifted (into 4h) on the fly. I do it quite often during winter. Never hurt a thing.

Ive never heard anything from my truck while shifting on the fly.

On a side note, had mine engaged the other night to get up Sara's driveway and when i pulled into the parking place, the 4x4 light flickered, is this just where i put a slight bind on the 4x4 system where i cut it hard to park?
