Knock in steering column?

Hey guys,

I have been noticing this knock in the steering column when turning the wheel. You can feel it and also hear the knock/click when turning. It doesnt do it everytime you turn but is doing during every drive.

My truck is an 04 Edge Reg Cab, 4x2 with 45 000 km. Any ideas what this could be? Would like to get it solved before my trucks warranty is done.

Is it coming from the steering wheel or column inside the truck, or is a noise from the front end coming up through the column? (Ball joints, wheel bearings, suspension issues)

to me it feels like its coming through the column right under the steering wheel.. I have to take a look at the fluid levels. Im hoping none of the above.. The truck has only been on the road for just over a year..

well im not sure.. i forgot to check the power steering fluid this morning because i was in a rush to get to work.. The noise was definately there though and I hear it when i turn left. I am going to drop off the truck at ford for a day and have everything looked at, I am experiencing a few other problems too..

Well FMD im not sure if you worry to much. My dad bought a Dodge Ram this summer and it had a click in the wheel. It started to annoy him so he brought it in to have it looked at. $1200 bucks in front end repair it needed. (truck was used with 100 000 km) Im not saying our trucks have the same problem but I would definately like to have it looked at during my warranty period. I cant remember the name of the parts that were causing this click either..

My truck has the same problem. its not a click or a continuos knock but only sometimes. It started to tick me off one day and if you grab the wheel at the top and bottom or right and left there is alittle play where the wheel is mounted.

There is a bolt that holds the two pieces of the steering column together under the hood right after it comes through the firewall. Make sure that bolt is TIGHT! I had this popping/clicking noise happen to me right after I did my body lift. Thought about it for a little while and figured it had to be the steering extension. It felt tight already but I got a breaker bar and tightened it as much as I could and I haven't heard the noise again since. Don't know if thats it, but its worth a shot.

This is where I found the information, pick your truck, pick your year and take a nice look at all the TSB's.... might be enough to make you cry. The site asks you to pay for a request for information, (I believe), but maybe with the Service Bulletin number you can find more technical info....?
