Icon8 Dont know it is

OK i got a 2006 ford ranger, V6 3cil. It was running great until i went though a hugh puddle of water about 1yr ago. it has prerun finders w/ no finder wells. SO basically the motor & all electrical is exposed. So now codes are reading random multi. misfires, misfire on cil.#4,5,&6, Bank 1 & 2 running too lean, multi misfires in the first 1,000revs. It runs fine when im on the freeway or otherwise moving. but when im at a stop light will blink, truck will start shaking bad. So then i put my foot on the pedal & theres NO power at all. i can have my foot all the way down in first gear & i'll be going like 2mph. then all of a sudden it will take off like i hit Nos or something & will run fine until i stop again. i get about 300miles per tank but now im raking 230miles per tank. i already changed the plugs, coli pack, & plug wires already. still no change.

I'm guessing he means he gets 30 mpg and now 23 mpg... or 300 miles per tank and now 230 miles per tank. Either way. The whole thread didn't make a whole lotta sense, but it sounds like your truck is messed up. Water + electricity = bad.

man i moshed the **** out of my ranger through water.. no IFS brackets, no inner fenders, wide *** wheel set.. I don't know what you did..

try the Mass air flow meter/sensor/dealio.. That'll make it run like ****.

and DON'T get it from Autozone. I've seen too many of those parts be bad off the shelf. We get cars in all the time, "oh yea we already changed that" ... get a part from the dealer and what do ya know.. it works.

i thought it might be a vacuum leak somewhere or O2 sensor

i would change the mass airflow sensor, that will really play havoc on how it will run,and mileage

I hit a puddle the size of a stock pond doing about 45 mph in my TJ Jeep a while back. The Jeep died in the puddle on US 412 and refused to start for the longest time. Finally got it fired up and continued on my way.........

But the next day, it was obvious that something wasn't right. On start up, the engine ran very rough, but would smooth out once it warmed up a little.

OBDII threw codes for a misfire on cylinder number one and a vaccuum leak.

Turned out that the engine had inhaled some of the water from the puddle. This in turn bent a few valves and compromised the seal on the head gasket.

Either that or the head gasket decided to take a dump at the same general time as I hit the puddle. Unlikely, since the head gasket had only 7 months of use on it.

I think it was water ingestion that caused my problem because water doesn't compress. Get some in a cylinder and you boost the effective compression ratio. Boost that high enough, and you could certainly have a head gasket failure and bent valves, or so it seems to me.

Probably not your problem, but an example of what can happen when you hit a little harmless water.........

In reading the OP's symptoms again, it sounds a lot like some BS my father dealt with when his Engine Control Computer crapped out on his Bronco II.

Sounds also kind of like symptoms my mom's Contour had when the crank position sensors crapped out.

I wouldn't personally just swap the MAF sensor (Or any of the engine management sensors, for that matter) without testing it with an meter first. No sense throwing money at parts that aren't broke. Make sure they're broke first before throwing money at them.

Ohm's law and a multi-meter, coupled with knowledge of what resistance and voltage values are supposed to be coming from the various sensors, are your friends when issues like the OP's arise.

Lol at JP for over explaining everything. It would have been easier just to say something like "ohm it out"

A vacuum leak will make it run rough, but won't cause that many misfires, not that I've seen.

You need to give us more information if you want help. Mileage? How long since last tune up -- and what plugs did you use. Did you gap the plugs, and to what...and if platinum, what method did you use to gap those plugs...

--

What you need to do is do a tune up first and foremost...with autolite plugs and replace all your wires too. Then you need to do a 3 step fuel treatment...and clean your MAF as well...check your vacuum lines for cracks and make sure none fell off...once you've done all that and cleared your codes, if your check engine light comes back, feel free to check it and report back...otherwise, every post is just full of guesses...no matter how sure someone is that they know what the problem is.
