Drum Brake Adjustment.

Well I replaced the driver side wheel cylinder in the brake drum since it was leaking. I will be replacing the other side but right know I have a problem. When I have to brake moderately the driver side reaer tire skids, sometimes for a while other times ABS kicks in. You can definitely fell the truck pull left. I think* that this drum is too tight but we didnt mess with the adjustment.

I have heard that when you back up and brake, the rear drums self adjust. I have tried this now 20 times with varying speed but no luck. Should I manually adjust them or could the poblem be something else?

The adjusters freeze up in no time at all.
Pull the passenger side apart , free up the adjuster , reassemble , then adjust it manually.
Whenever you adjust one side , you HAVE to check the other , or else you'll experience the same problem you're having.

Solved it... the passenger side wheel cylinder was bad too so it got lazy. After repacing it both sides now skid a little so every thing is good now.

The brakes usually adjust themselves when you hit the brake while rolling backwards.

I'm glad to see the truck is back on the road.

The brakes only adjust out when you brake in reverse. If they are too tight you need to pull the drum off and adjust it down then brake in reverse.

bump!

My uncle just recently experienced this kind of issue on his brake drum after he had replaced them. Right now he is kinda confused if he should manually adjust it or something else is wrong with it. Lucky to find this thread, I think this would really help my uncle with his problem. I'm gonna let my uncle know about this so he could try out it. Anyway, thanks for sharing it.

So to manually adjust the rear drums do you spin the adjuster up and out or down and out? This is from the underneath the truck goin through the slot in the backing plate.

Spinning it up tightens it.
