In need of some offroad equipment

First off i need something that can go in my hitch for rear recovery.

second i need recovery straps - whats a good size?

i have the 20'? 25'? it was $25... like 2" wide strap from walmart, its worked great i see no need for a big expensive one unless your going to be using it everyday, or you need a really heavy one because your pulling on/ getting pulled on by really heavy powerful trucks.

i just put the loop of the strap into my hitch and put the pin through it.

for the hitch, if you want something, this looked pretty badass

I personally don't like the Wal-Mart straps. I have seen them break. They are not ment to be "tugged" on. Maybe that is why it broke. If you want to tug on a stuck vehicle then i would get a recovery strap or a ****** strap. They are ment to be tugged on and stretch a lil to aid in the recovery. Just remember this is my personal opinion.

ive got a 4" 30ft strap that i LOVE and i always use it to pull ppl out.
i got it from 4wheelparts.com and it was relatively cheap for a strap that size.

as for your hitch reciever,
id reccomend eaither a D-ring shackle
or a hook

i have this

JR the ball has been known to break off and when it does the strap will slingshot that a long ways. that ball was not designed to be jerked on.

a D shackle is a closed loop and much much stronger than a ball.

many people have been killed from improper use of a strap.

Amen to that. Those ***** can be killer, literally. Go the proper safe route, and shackle or hook it on a receiver.

I would go with the D-ring. Its a closed loop and as long as you have them on both ends of the strap, the only way that strap is comming off is if something breaks. I dont like the chance of the strap being able to slip off of the hook.

I use my $20 Northern tow strap. Its got the hooks on both ends of the strap. I wrap it around the ball and clip it to itself. Works every time.

Bad bad bad! Its a tow strap, so DO NOT yank or tug with that strap AT ALL. It has no stretch. Also, Its possible for that strap to snap, or a hook to come undone, and one of those metal hooks to become a projectile.

You need a recovery strap, which will stretch, and has no metal hooks...

My arsenal:
2x 10k pound, 15' tow straps (they had hooks, but I cut 'em off)
1x 20k pound, 30' ****** strap
a dozen or so different sized d-rings
1x 10k pound, 10' heavy duty chain

I keep all this in one of those "environmentally friendly" reusable grocery bags (fabric ones) in my cab.

Ohh, and a 5 foot hi-lift.

Hey, that's what I have. I love my ARB strap, and the pintle hitch makes life much easier when you are doing a lot of pulling.

Um.... I tied one end around a stump and the other around the ball on my hitch and yanked the hell out of that thing. The hooks are stronger then the strap, meaning the strap will snap long before the hooks will ever break.

Its too bad you dont understand physics. When a line under tension snaps it snaps straight back its not going to go flying ***** nilly through the air and cut everyone in a 30' radius in half. Therefore, dont stand near a strap when its under tension. If your sitting in the drivers seat your fine.

no need to get upset, hes just saying use a real strap with nothing metal, just loop ends that you can put in a closed clevis or d-ring. i agree this is the best and only way to go.

even if u strap yourself to a tree and go ***** out, that has no meaning here, its safety thats everyones concern, not how much stress can be put on the strap to prove its worthy. if you wanng go physics, what would have more potential of harming something, a strap breaking with a metal hook, or a strap breaking with a closed loop end?

and for your main post, WTF are you using the ball for. you have no right to talk
