I don't like an auto off-road because I hate having to worry about the darn thing overheating. I even added a big, stacked plate cooler and would still see fluid temps jump to 200 degrees in loose sand or lots of low speed stuff... and that was with 4.10 gears and 31" tires.
Granted I had a 2wd and didn't have the benefit of low range, but still.
I'll admit that it's nicer wheelin' an auto. But my personal peace of mind and unrestriced control over the drivetrain trumps convenience any day.

I bought my truck with the intentions on towing, had a manual ranger before, loved it but i needed to tow because of some current obligations I had at the time.
I hated my auto before i built it this last time. Only when wheeling though, it worked great otherwise.
Now its alright, i like it, it works fine for what I need so its good enough. The 4r100 is a good trans so I am just going to run it too since i have it.
So its all preference on what you want.
A manual T case is the best hands down though.

i've said it before and i'll say it again.....
i don't know how to drive an automatic
i have driven autos before and i always reach down to shift or stomp the floor hoping to hit the third pedal
i prefer it because it helps me pay attention while driving, personally i think everyone first starting to drive should use a stick ESPECIALLY teenage girls.
they would spend less time dicking around texting on they're cell phones or putting on makeup and pay more attention to the road...or else end up in a ditch....i know it may sound harsh but hey, survival of the fittest. if you feel the need to text while driving and you crash and burn...then the gene pool doesn't need your contribution.

^^HAHAHAHA. add 4.88. lol.
ok.....my opinion....
Each have their highs and lows....autos have that little overheating fluid issue. manuals have that slave issue. autos have that awesome ability to tow. manuals have that little weak *** slave issue. autos you can't tell you've got bigger tires on it w/o gear change....manuals you can REALLY tell you've put larger tires on w/o gear change. lol.
I love wheelin' my manual truck that's properly geared and locked up. 4lo at idle or just above is sex. Sure, there's the occasional stall...but who cares? Having a good clutch is nice too...stock sucks for wheelin'...too much slippage. I love my Spec Stage 2 for it's grabbyness, yet being able to slip when i need it to. And it's just plain funner than an auto. Whether it be on the street, or out playin' in snow or on the rocks. Plus I just love shifting my own gears.
That being said....my chevy, at the time, had a 350hp 350sbc and a SM465 4spd w/ granny low. SURE, it's the perfect trans for wheelin'. NOT the perfect trans for a street/strip truck. I swapped an auto into that truck because 19sec 1/4miles SUCK....imagine....2nd gear, 3rd gear, at the line. lol. Awesome at crawlin' up hills....bad for my desired application.

If you have an auto, dont let the coolant lines run through the radiator and magically it stops overheating. lol
The radiator gets to 200 easy when wheeling, so your naturally heating the trans fluid even more. I can wheel all day long without the trans overheating, but when i start pulling people out it gets a bit warm.
I still miss driving a manual, but i like the auto for what it is, not enough to change lol

Does the factory setup run the transmission fluid through the in-tank radiator cooler before or afer the auxillary cooler in front of the condensor?
Like this:
Trans --> radiator --> aux. cooler --> Trans
or like this:
Trans --> aux. cooler --> radiator --> Trans
You're right about 200 degrees being the norm in the radiator- I'm fine with that. It's just that 200 degrees for ATF is where I want to start backin' off.

its like that i believe, its been a while since i have messed with it. Ford does that for people in COLD climates, it was pretty cold here this year and i had no issues with it at all. Maybe a rough shift or it will run out of OD, for an extra bit until it warms up.
The aux cooler isnt large enough for people in warm conditions IMO. I added an additional cooler when i changed the routing so i have 2 aux coolers, it works well. Usually run around 130-140 most of the time. Maybe 160 when out wheeling. I really dont worry about it any more.
