It can vary. Rangers are known for "excessive" reserve in our model years. Mine has about 3 gallons left in the 19+ gallon tank when the light comes on.

If you have a standard cab, you have a smaller tank and I don't know what yours is like.

Mine normally comes on with about 3 gallons left in the tank. That can vary depending on how I am driving. If I am going down hill and slam on the brakes it could come on with more than 4 gallons left in the tank. If I am driving on a flat interstate without braking it may go down to 2.5 gallons left in the tank.

Don't depend on using the reserve because it's there to keep the fuel pump cool. If you run all the fuel out the pump may overheat or burn out. I have been told the system shuts down before all the fuel is used.

That's how it was explained to me when they started using electronic fuel inj. and in tank fuel pumps.

Well I saw mine today as I pulled in the gas station and put exactly 16 gallons to full in there so mine is 3.5 gallons.

According to the scanguage.. my 06 had 0.17 of a tank left when the light first came on. So.. mathmaticaly that's 3.3 gallons left.

And based on my experience / best guess... 3 gallons is about right for my truck.

word of wisdom ..

mine probably has only 1.5 gal. in the tank on reserve so i never want to let it get that low...
