Anyone drag race there ranger?

I am going to watch a buddy race at the drag strip. Since it is bracket racing I thought hell with it I am going to race my ranger too. Just for fun. But for the competitive person I am I want to win lol.

I have a 04 4.0 with 33s. AUTO!

I can start in the road with the brake all the way down and the gas all the way to the floor. Then dump the brake like a clutch with minimum wheel spin. Mainly just some chirrping. How bad do you think this is on my truck? Guessing not something I want to do all the time lol.

Also since its bracket racing I have to dial in. not sure what times I will be running but lets say I run a 17.2, 17.34 and 17.0. What should I dial in at? 17.1? or maybe just go with 17.0 since its my first time and no sence in getting DNFed?

When I watch it on TV I notice if the guy is ahead of the person next to them they let of the gas right before the finish line. why is that?

gerry races his 94 splash, takes it to Fun Ford weekends

When I watch it on TV I notice if the guy is ahead of the person next to them they let of the gas right before the finish line. why is that?
that might have nothing to do with who is first, if its bracket racing, it might mean the guy is going to fast for his dialed in time

I started reading about it.

If you dial in a 17.0 and the guy next to you dialed in at 14.0 and when your almost to the finish line, if he is maybe a car link or 2 behind you, they slow down so they barley beat them so that you do not go under your time and you know you beat them still. Make sence lol

google works wonders lol

good info here

Just so happens I know a thing or two about dragracing mostly stock vehicles.

You'll be fine. Just don't start your "power brake" until both of you are fully staged. The only thing your doing is heating up the tranny fluid. As long as you keep it down to under 10seconds you'll be fine.

HOWEVER... Your most consistant runs will come from not spinning the tires at all. Try the all out powerbrake run.. but also try powerbraking to about 1000rpm then on the last yellow PLANT the throttle hard and quick. Letting up off the brake at the same time. This "flashes the convertor" and sometimes can both cushion the tires and get you a little quicker launch. Just depends on many factors. Give both ways a try and look only at the 60ft times to determine which is best.

You need to get 2 solid non tire spinning runs in. Set your dial in 0.05 seconds quicker than your best ET on a good run. As the temps drop (like in the evening) you'll gain a little power. So.. if it cools off more than 15 degree drop your dial in a full 0.1

This is the point at which you will be beaten by a faster car. He knows your running all out and have no cushion. So he dials in a ET that he can easily run. So you two get down to the 1000ft mark.. he catchs you.. then all he has to do is put his bumper in front of yours and you loose.

My advise from having run at least 1000times down the 1/4... completely ignore the guy in the other lane. If you want to compete.. focus on **YOUR** launch being consistant. That's pretty much where you win or loose assming your dial in is right.

Something else that's always an unthought about thing with a street car is noise. Watch your tach. Just assume right up front that you won't be able to hear a thing. Watch that tach, get a feel for what the truck feels like when you spin a little, and get that launch "feeling" so that you could do it in your sleep.

Thanks. I might practice a little bit at my house just for lauching. I was thinking of holding the brake down just enough to hold the RPMS at a steady1,000 or 2,000. like you said above.

Thanks for the help, I just need to practice a little

I race a bunch. Different theories for different racers. Here's mine:

1. You want to be faster than the other guy if possible. The reason- the first to leave is the first to redlight. Instant win for the other guy. If you are the slow car you have to be that much better.

2. Set your dial in for a time you KNOW you can run. You can always slow down if you are ahead, but how do you speed up if you are behind?

3. If you are ahead at the finish, slow down to keep from running too fast. If you are behind at the finish, slow down in hopes that HE ran too fast. Don't do it too soon, you need to keep the pressure on him so he can't slow down himself.

4. I just leave at idle when bracket racing. You're not trying to hit new records so don't worry about it. Keep it simple. Trying to hold the revs while everything else is going on can be confusing. Especially with courtesy staging and being new to the game.

5. Without a decent reaction time, everything else is irrelevant. A 2/10 difference in reaction time is a big deal. If you beat him off the line by 2/10's and you are the slower car, you'll never see him. If he does get by you, he'll break out. You have to spend the time on this part of it. Practice, practice. This has nothing to do with revving, it's when you leave in relation to the lights. It can't be practiced at home.

GranitGuy is correct in all he said, but we have a ' sandbagged ' that likes to cause people to ' breakout '.

He indexes at 10flat. He CONSISTANTLY runs 10.020 with a dually GMC truck ( Its an 8th mile ) . He does such as most of the other ' street ' vehicals there are MUCH faster. So he gets to leave first.

What he does, he slows down in the second half of the length. In doing so, you WANT to pass him and he gladly lets you ! Thus you run faster then what you indexed for your run.

I would NOT brake-launch as hard as what your saying. Its hard on your vehical. I WOULD launch at a lower ( under 2500rpm ) mark and do it all the time or at whatever YOU feel comfortable with.

What screws with people on my part, I run 3.31 gears. Everyone wants those 4.10's or 4.56's so they can launch off the line.. But I only use 3 gears to cover the 8th mile and can run to 7grand on the Tach sucking in Nitrous above 3500 rpm's the whole time.

I never worry about ' catch up ' or ' breakout ' as I take my average time, and add 0.100 to it. It leaves ' room ' to be caught in, but it kills off ' sand baggers ' whom like to slow down. Either they run what their capable of, or they loose.
So what your saying is.

If I run lets say in practice. 17.355, 17.298, 17.253. I would want to dial in at 17.1 and just hammer it down the hole race and not worry about what other ppl are doing to try to get me to breakout or catch up?

Ya I was thinking of just lauching around 2,000 RPM.
