Swapping out 04 Gauges

I got me an 04 with some 04 gauges that are the white ones..

i got a friend that has an 04 set that are black..now here comes my question...

can I swap them...since everythin is digital is the milage in the cluster or in the computer...

i got like 18K on mine and he has like 45K so if im gunna give him 18K then forget it but if it will stay the same im goin for it..

...Discuss...

They will definitely swap electronically. I am pretty sure that the milage is recorded in the computer, not in the cluster. YOu should have no problem. You would be the 1st person I know of to have done anything with the 2004+ cluster.

The odometer value is stored in the instrument cluster itself which has its own microprocessor for 2004+. Since the PCM has no non-volatile data storage capability, it wouldn't be capable of "remembering" the miles if it lost battery power. The odometer display cannot be reset by any legitimate dealer tool or shop manual procedure (for obvious reasons).

the only thing you can do is order a new one from a dealership, they have a form to fill out that records your odometer, and they can program the mileage into the new cluster. Bob is right though, a "by the book" dealership wont be able to do it, unless they use the same form to record your before mileage. youll just have to ask

Just to clarify, the dealership orders the new replacement cluster but the actual odometer programming is done at a service center that specializes in this procedure, not at the dealer. If I'm not mistaken, the original cluster must be turned in to the service center to be destroyed.

I hate the new clusters, but everyone is intittled to their opinion. Have y'all looked at the F series clusters? The have 4 gauges versus the 2 and the F250SD clusters are "real" gauges and not just fancy idiot lights.
